Lady Tigers punch ticket to Fab Four

Box Score

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — In a major-league reversal of fortune, Campbellsville rallied from 19 points down and wormed its way into the Fab Four of the NAIA Women's DI National Championships Saturday night with a 73-64 come-from-behind win over fifth-ranked Bethel University.

It is the first time in program history that the Campbellsville women have ventured this far into the tournament. The Lady Tigers have been in the quarter finals four out of the last six years, but this is plowing new ground.

CU will square off Monday at 9 p.m. ET in the Independence Events Center against No. 1 seed Freed Hardeman - their third national tournament meeting in the last five seasons - BOX SCORE

The Lady Tigers trailed by 19, 53-34, with 15:35 left in the game and then they started hitting on all cylinders.

The charge was led by seldom-used senior Lindey Young who entered the game and scored five points and pulled down seven rebounds. It was Young's energy that seemed to get everyone else involved. Sophomores LeeAnn Grider and Madison Clements each had a huge second half, scoring 10 and 15 points, respectively.

"How great is it to close out your senior season with an effort like that," said coach Ginger Colvin of Young.

Bethel (32-4) led by nine three times in the first half and took a seven-point, 39-32, lead into the halftime break after Grider was called for a change on a buzzer-beating layup.

The Wildcats came out of the break and hit three 3s, two by Shamon Pearson, and led 50-32.

"We had a problem and we needed a solution," said Colvin.

So, she scrapped her patented Twilight Zone for man-to-man and her players responded. The Lady Tigers forced eight second-half turnovers and picked up five steals in the final 20 minutes.

Emily Fox hit consecutive 3s, Grider scored five and then Clements scored eight straight, to forge a 62-58 lead. Another Clements' basket culminated a 34-5 run and a 68-58 lead with just under four minutes to go in the game.

Clements led three Lady Tigers in double figures with 18. Grider had 17 points, five assist and eight rebounds. Caroline Owen added 13.

"I think the difference was our fresh legs," said Colvin. "We rode Lindsey (Burd) and Chelsea (Craig) for as long as we could, but when we went to our bench we started clicking."

Bethel's Tayla Foster led all players with 22 points and got double figure support from Kenyatta Drake (13) and Pearson (13).

After being outrebounded in the first half 24-18 (11 of those offensive boards) CU went into beast mode, yanking down loose ball after loose ball unto the final margin was 43-41 in favor of Campbellsville.

CU was 8-for-17 from behind the arc while Bethel was 9-for-28.

The win is the largest comeback victory in Colvin's eight seasons as head coach, and possibly the largest in Lady Tiger basketball history.
