Baseball sweeps Georgetown in home-opening DH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – It took five weeks for the weather to cooperate, but Campbellsville University finally took the field at home Saturday, and did so with a doubleheader sweep of Mid-South Conference foe Georgetown College.

The Tigers took the first game  4-2 and clung onto an early 1-0 lead in the nightcap.

CU had 17 home games postponed, relocated or canceled over the last month leading up to Saturday's anticipated home conference series, which was delayed a day due to wet conditions.

Game 1 (BOX SCORE) – Campbellsville 4, Georgetown 2

Ricky McColloch sparked the Tigers' offense with a leadoff double down the leftfield line in the third inning. Casey Scott delivered a sac bunt to move McColloch to third, and the Miguel Solano-Espinoza drove in the first run with a sac fly.

Tiger starting pitcher Mario Morales gave up his first hit of the game with a leadoff single by Duran Elmore in the top of the fourth. Elmore later scored on a single to left by Steven Mancilla to even the score, 1-1.

Morales and Georgetown's Tyler Arthur were locked in a pitcher's duel  through the top of the seventh, but CU racked up three runs following the seventh inning stretch. Garett Everhart delivered a one-out single and was awarded second after an Arthur balk, his second of the game. Jamie Valle and McColloch followed with singles to score Everhart on the later as the go-ahead run. Gentry Kinsella (running for Valle) and McColloch scored on a deep single by Torres to make it 4-1 CU.

The insurance closed the day for Morales, who picked up his third win. He allowed one unearned run off four hits through seven innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Indalecio Romo gave up a solo home run to left by Ricky Reyes in the top of the eighth. Alex Scanlan gave chase on the play, nearly flipping over the fence, but was just out of reach.

Logan Truex took over and shut down the visiting Tigers with three ground outs and a strikeout to even Campbellsville's MSC record at 2-2.

Torres led CU with a 3-for-4 performance from the plate in the first game, while McColloch and Everhart each had two hits. Chris Allen and Valle had CU's other two base knocks.

GAME 2 (BOX SCORE) – Campbellsville 1, Georgetown 0

The Tigers' lone run came in the bottom of the second when Casey Scott was hit in the helmet with the bases loaded. Alex Scanlan scored the winning run after reaching on a one-out single. Shane Woodson followed with a single, and then Ricky McColloch reached on an error on a sac bunt to set up the run.

CU only had four other hits in the game, including a leadoff double by Scott in the first.

Jake Pannunzio picked up the win in relief of Chris Tuma, allowing one hit through three innings of work. Truex once again came in for a save, striking out the last two batters with the tying run in scoring position.

Woodson and Scott had two hits in the game, Scanlan had one and Jeremy Rosenthal had the other.

Campbellsville (12-4, 3-2 MSC) and Georgetown (4-7, 3-2 MSC) will close their series Sunday at 1 p.m. at HIG Field.
