Box Score 2 CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville used the long ball and the short ball Saturday in its home opener, defeating Lindsey Wilson 5-4 and 1-0, sweeping the No. 2 team in the nation at Veterans Memorial Park.
 Â
In game one, Campbellsville (10-4, 1-0 MSC) used the long ball to slip by the No. 2 Blue Raiders, orbiting three bombs — one a missile by Haley Szpila (3) off the Community Center in left field.
Â
Lindsey Wilson (16-4, 0-1 MSC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Chelsea Showers was issued a leadoff walk. Andrea Whelan advanced Showers to third with a single and Showers scored on Amanda Trampe's fielder's choice.
Â
But that lead was short lived. CU used a walk to Kristin Benton and a Szpila's homer to take a lead the Lady Tigers would not relinquish.
Â
Erin Benton (1) and Markie Smith (3) hit solo shots in the bottom of the second for a 4-1 lead.
Â
LWC plated a run in the top of the fifth off a four-bagger by Emily Goedde, but CU came right back and added its fifth run. Kristin Benton's single scored Jacqueline Roof, who led off the bottom of the inning with a double.
Â
That's when Jordan Hood came in in relief of LWC starter Lyndsey Parden (5-2), who absorbed the loss.
Â
Victoria Decker (6-2) was the winner in the circle. She allowed four hits, walked three and struck out four.
Â
Lindsey's Abbi Goedde made things interesting in the top of the seventh when she hit a two-run homer with no outs following Sydney Fourman's four-pitch walk. Decker coaxed Ericka Clifford to ground out to second and then fanned Jenna Firestein. After Showers reached on an error to third, Whelan then grounded out to the circle to end the game.
Â
In game two, Szpila's fourth inning leadoff double helped produced the only score of the game. Rebecca Miller and Erin Benton both dropped down sacrifice bunts, the later scoring the winning run.
Â
Neely Quint (5-2) spread out five hits and did not walk a batter. She struck out three. CU (11-4, 2-0) was in trouble in the first and fifth innings, but Quint stranded two runners in each frame to seal her shutout win.
Â
Lindsey's Casey Bryan (6-2) allowed only two hits and struck out nine in the hard-luck loss. Lindsey Wilson drops to 16-5, 0-2 MSC.
Â
The Lady Tigers are scheduled to host Lindsey Wilson again Sunday, March 22 in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
