OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — (RESULTS) It has been over a month since Campbellsville women's wrestling hit the mats against any opponent but you wouldn't have known it by the results this past weekend at the University Nationals. Five of the 11 Lady Tigers who made the trip, finished in the top six.
"This tournament can be even tougher than the WCWA Nationals," said CU head coach
Lee Miracle. "The United States Olympic Education Center (USOEC) athletes from the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs are eligible for this tournament. Overall we had a decent showing, but I was pleased with performances from several of the girls."
Kayla Miracle led the charge after receiving a bye in the first round and wrestling her way to two tech falls and a pin. Miracle, who was wrestling at 60kg (132.3 lbs), tech'd Rachel Hale from King University in her quarterfinal matchup, pinned Natalie Hinojo from Oklahoma City in 1:56 in the semis and then won by tech fall over Rachel McFarland from OCU in the finals.
"Kayla just keeps getting it done," said Lee Miracle. "She wrestled a talented opponent in the finals and everyone thought it was going to be a great match, but Kayla dominated with great technique and positioning. She has incredible work ethic and continues to do the right things on and off the mat."
The other matches for the Lady Tigers saw familiar opponents in the later rounds. Four times, coach Lee Miracle had two of his wrestlers competing against each other.
Hanna Hall finished in third place at 69kg (152.1 lbs). Hall won her first three matches before falling to Kayla Aggio from OCU. The sophomore WCWA All-American came right back, though, and tech'd her teammates Hannah Gladden, 13-2 and pinned Michelle Organ in the third place match.
Since Hall pinned Organ in the third place match, Organ finished fourth. She also won five matches and fell to Aggio from OCU, 12-2, in the quarterfinals.
"I am very pleased with the performance from many of the girls," said Lee Miracle. "Michelle Organ and Hanna Hall both wrestled very well and showed continued improvement."
Rosemary Flores finished behind Miracle in the 60kg weight class. Flores lost her first match to Olivia Seppinni from McKendree University, 7-6, but rallied through the consolation bracket to win her next four matches, including a pin over her teammate Kasey Rickets. Flores then lost by decision to Seppinni in another thriller for third place, 6-4.
"Although Rosemary Flores lost both of her matches to the same opponent, she had a chance in each by having Seppinni on her back. They both could have easily gotten the fall call," said Miracle. "She wrestled tough the entire day and sometimes you just do not get those calls."
Gladden finished in sixth place in the 69kg weight class. She fell to Lisa Gonzalez of Lindenwood University, 8-1 in her final match.
Michelle Lomas, Abby Sallee, Kasey Ricketts, Shelby Hall, Kasey Kruczek and Maggie Wilson also made the trip to Oklahoma City.
"It was interesting to see that the college programs are now producing the majority of the World and Pan Am Team members representing our great country," said Miracle. "I would say that's due to the overall quality and depth of our college programs. That is a direct reflection of the improvement in coaching throughout the WCWA."
