New No. 12 softball takes down Bulldogs twice

LEBANON, Tenn. — Campbellsville took two games from Cumberland University today and then found out that it had gained a No. 12 national ranking, the highest in program history.



  

"I'm excited for the program and all the hard work that's been put in over the years," said coach Shannon Wathen. "I'm especially excited for this team and how hard they continue to work."

CU won the first game 5-3 and the second 7-4 to move its record to 20-5, 11-1 MSC. The previous high-water mark in the national rankings was 14th, according to Wathen. NAIA RELEASE - CLICK HERE

 

The Lady Tigers led the first game 5-0 going into Cumberland's final at-bat, allowing three runs when winning pitcher Victoria Decker (11-2) gave up three hits and the leadoff batter reached on an error. Decker allowed six hits altogether, striking out two and walking two.

 

Campbellsville recorded a run in the first inning by loading the bases without a hit and then a base on balls to Haley Szpila plated the run. The Lady Tigers would add another run in the second on a RBI-single by Jacqueline Roof.

 

Two runs crossed in the top of the fifth when Rebecca Miller singled with the bases loaded. The fifth run came on Kendyl Ahrens' ground out fielder's choice in the top of the seventh.

 

Miller had two hits (2 RBIs), and Roof, Brianna Scott, Szpila and Ahrens all hit safely in the game.

 

In game two, Neely Quint (9-3) worked her way around an 11-hitter as her team committed three errors behind her and with the Bulldogs (9-17, 5-7) scoring twice in their final at-bat.

 

Campbellsville had two more hits and two RBIs from Miller, who parked her second homer of the season in the second.

 

The Lady Tigers led 3-1 and picked up three more runs in the fifth.

 

Roof, Erin Benton and Miller had two hits apiece and Kristin Benton, Markie Smith, Reagan Kingrey, Adrean Jordan and Shelby Ray has one hit each.

 

The Lady Tigers (20-5,11-1 MSC) are scheduled to play Pikeville in a two-day, four-game series Friday and Saturday, April 3-4 with the first pitch set to begin at 2:00 on Friday and noon on Saturday.

 

Seniors will be recognized on Saturday prior to the first game.
