Swim team concludes NAIA Championship

OKLAHOMA CITY - The NAIA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships concluded Saturday with several more CU personal records broken.

The Lady Tigers competed in four events, which brought CU's 12-event stint in the three-day championships to a close.

CU men's and women's swimming coach Casey Smith was thrilled with the performance of her swimmers. "I am abundantly pleased with my competing athletes," she said. "For three days they have been working very well together, encouraging one another and really moving and swimming as one!"

In her third individual event of the championships, Shelby Mattingly set a personal record in the 100-yard freestyle. The junior had qualified with a 55.93-second A-cut time in February at the MSC Championships. She shaved a significant 0.87 seconds off of her previous time during the preliminary heat to finish in 55.06 seconds. Seven of the 100-free competitors had faster seed times than Mattingly, but her new personal best time allowed her to jump up and secure a 35th-place finish out of 59.

"It feels wonderful to have worked so hard throughout the season and to have reached my best time," said Mattingly. "After 13 years of swimming, any personal bests are exciting!"

Junior Bailey Foxworth was in the pool for all three of the remaining CU events Saturday, starting with her second individual race, the 200-yard butterfly. After qualifying for the event at the MSC Championships, she entered with a seed time of 2:19.64. Foxworth's first split was fast (29.83 seconds), but she could not hold the pace. She finished in 29th place with a time of 2:23.70.

Next, the relay team of Emily Hunter, Foxworth, Jessica Cook, and Mattingly slashed almost a full second per leg in the 400-yard freestyle. Previously 3:54.24, their new time of 3:51.06 launched CU up to 15th place, sending them to the final heats taking place as the last event of the three-day championship.

Foxworth's full day concluded with her final individual race in the 1650-yard freestyle. She was seeded with an A-cut time of 18:51.55 from the MSC Championships. Foxworth swam the 33 laps in 18:58.67, finishing 25th.

In the consolation heat of the 400 free relay, CU competed against seven other teams, including conference rival Lindsey Wilson College. Even after an exhausting three-day stint, the CU team dropped 3.81 seconds from its seed time to finish in 3:50.55. They finished 21st of 25 teams in the overall contest.

"I am thankful to have experienced my third nationals," says Mattingly. "And I am so happy it all ended on a good note. "

Smith was also grateful for not only the performances of her athletes, but the character demonstrated throughout. "I saw great attitudes and wonderful effort from all of them," she said. "One thing that stood out this year is how engaged my alternates were with their competing teammates. They cheered them on, and supported them the whole way through."

She also looks ahead to the future of Lady Tiger Swimming.

"We had a really great group this year! I think this really sets us up for a great year next year too. We have an awesome foundation to build on, and I know we can have another great year with wonderful growth in the program and a whole bundle of great swims and new memories."
