Tigers bounce back with 8-3 win at AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Campbellsville bounced back from its 10-4 loss at No. 5 Faulkner University by traveling across town Monday for an 8-3 win at Auburn University Montgomery.

The Tigers fell behind 2-0 in the first after going three-up, three-down in the top half of the inning. Darius Reese started the game for the Warhawks with a leadoff single and moved into scoring position on an error to setup AUM's first run on a Matt Miller double to left-center. Miller also scored in the inning on a ground out RBI by Dalton Kelley.

CU designated hitter Carlos Torres (4-for-4) got the Tigers' offense going with one out in the second, doubling to left. He and Ricky McColloch, who was hit by a pitch, later scored on a one-out single to left by Alex Scanlan to even the score, 2-2. Scanlan crossed home to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead on an error which would have ended the inning. Scanlan was 2-for-2 on the day with a run scored and two RBIs.

AUM briefly regained the lead in the bottom half with a leadoff double by Kaleb Harris. Cody Rush, running for Harris, scored on a sac fly to right by Bryan Young to make it 3-3.

Mario Morales relieved Tiger starter Jake Pannunzio in the bottom of the second and struck out Reese to end the inning. Morales went on to retire his first 10 batters faced through the fifth inning.

Campbellsville regained the lead, 4-3, in the top of the fourth after Casey Scott (2-for-6) delivered a one-out single to score McColloch.

CU added insurance, 6-3, in the top of the fifth with an RBI single by Torres to score Alex Kline. Torres later scored on a two-out double to deep leftfield by McColloch. The Tigers then added two more runs in the eighth, starting with a Scott RBI triple in the eighth. He later scored on a Kline single to cap the scoring. Kline also finished the game with two hits.

While Morales gave up his first hit to start the bottom of the sixth, he held AUM scoreless through his 6 1/3 innings pitched and allowed only two hits on the day for his second win of the season. He struck out five. Logan Truex pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth to close the game.

Campbellsville had six extra-base hits in the game, including five doubles – two by Torres and one each by Kline, McColloch and Scanlan.

 The Tigers plated eight of their 19 base runners, leaving 11 stranded, including the bases juiced in the fourth and eighth innings.

 Campbellsville (7-2) and AUM (15-7) will meet again Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT.
