PORTSMOUTH, OHIO — If a series was played in only two games the Tigers would be coming home all smiles. But the Mid-South Conference plays three-games and CU could not keep its momentum in the final game. After defeating Shawnee State, 9-4 in game two of the series today, The Tigers fell on a walkoff single in game three, 2-1.

Campbellsville (22-6, 10-4 MSC) held on in game two and fought off a push by Shawnee State (12-21, 6-8 MSC) in the middle innings. Ricky McColloch sealed the victory in the ninth inning, as he drove a 1-0 fastball over the left field fence to push Campbellsville ahead, 9-4.

After scattering 12 hits in game two, the Tigers offensive momentum would come to a halt in the third game recording only five hits. Shawnee State's Jacob Waters would single in Andrew Vanthournout from third base in the bottom of the seventh for the game-winner to knock off the 16th-ranked Tigers.

Game one – Campbellsville 9, Shawnee State 4

Carlos Torres and Alex Kline led the way for CU with three hits in the first game of the doubleheader, second of the series.

The Tigers saw spectacular pitching performances from its staff. Nick Morehead went 6.1 innings and struck out four batters en route to his seventh win of the season.

CU recorded single runs in the fourth and sixth innings but added crooked numbers in the second, fifth and ninth innings for its nine runs.

Kline and Alex Scanlan led off the second with singles and both advanced and scored on wild pitches by Shawnee State starting pitcher Cody Strayer.

The Tigers took advantage of three more mishaps by Strayer in the fifth inning. After a leadoff walk to Chris Allen, he advanced to second base on an errant throw by Strayer. Miguel Solano also reached on a walk and both runners advanced on another wild pitch.

Torres delivered the blow with a two-RBI double down the left field line. Casey Scott followed with a two-bagger of his own to score Torres and push CU up, 6-0.

CU scored another run in the sixth before Shawnee State made a little noise and followed with two-spots in the sixth and seventh. But the bullpen, made up of Indalecio Romo, Casey Congleton and Logan Truex, came up big and shutdown the Bears in the final 2.1 innings, allowing only three hits and striking out four.

Game two – Shawnee State 2, Campbellsville 1

It was a pitchers' duel in the final game of the series. CU's starter Jake Pannunzio went 5.1 innings and allowed one run on five hits, while striking out six.

The first run for the Bears came in the third inning after a one-out walk. Blake Maines doubled in Jacob Waters for his second hit in as many at-bats. CU could not hold down the two-three hitters for SSU, as Waters and Maines had five of the seven hits for SSU.

Mike Watson was the reason for CU's struggles at the plate, as he threw a complete-game four hitter.

Although, the CU bats were silenced by Watson, senior Alex Kline delivered a two-out dinger to knot the game at one and give the Tigers a little momentum in the top of the seventh.

But the pitching staff could not hold down the late rally by Shawnee State. Vanthournout singled to start the bottom half and advanced to third via a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch by closer Logan Truex. Waters then delivered the walkoff single down the left field line for the win to give Truex his first loss of the season.

Campbellsville now sits in second place inside the Mid-South Conference at 10-4. St. Catharine leads the MSC by a half game with a 10-3 record. Lindsey Wilson sits in third place in the standings at 9-5.

The Tigers will now move out of conference and play a home-and-home series with Union College on Tuesday and Wednesday — April 14 and 15.
