Tigers fall in mid-week game at Union

Box Score

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. — (BOX SCORE) After going back and fourth with Mother Nature the previous two days, Campbellsville and Union College finally met on the diamond. The Bulldogs knocked off the 15th-ranked Tigers, 7-6 this afternoon at Jerry Carey Stadium.

The offense for both teams was thriving in the opening two innings, as Union College took a 4-0 lead after the first inning but CU answered with five runs in the second.

Union knocked CU starting pitcher Chris Tuma out of the first inning after scattering five of its 10 base hits with three of those doubles. Casey Congleton relieved Tuma with two outs in the first inning and recorded the final out.

The Tigers came right back with a five-spot in the second after recording three-straight one-out singles. With the bases loaded, Chris Allen drew a walk to score Garrett Everhart then Miguel Solano singled to drive in Ricky McColloch and Jaime Valle. The big blow once against came from the Mid-South Conference's top hitter, Carlos Torres. The senior from Venezuela drove a ball to deep left-center field to score Allen and Solano to take a 5-4 lead.

Torres and Solano led the Tigers at the plate with two hits a piece in five at bats.

Union was able to take advantage of a pair of CU errors and knotted the game at five in the fourth inning.

Coach Beauford Sanders went to senior Matt Robertson (1-2) out of the pen in the fifth inning and the Bulldogs once again took advantage of a defensive mishap. After recording two quick strikeouts, Nelson Price reached base after the Tigers' third error in two innings. JT Green then pushed Union back on top with a two-run double, 7-5.

Campbellsville played small ball to add its sixth run in the sixth inning. Everhart reached on a walk and Ricky McColloch moved him to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Everhart stole third base, Shane Woodson delivered an RBI single to cut the lead to 7-6.

But that is where the score would stay. Union threw its entire pitching staff at the Tigers, having nine pitchers combining to give up nine hits and six runs. In addition to Tuma, Congleton and Robertson, Campbellsville brought in Nick Morehead and Indalecio Romo for the final 1.2 innings and both threw scoreless innings.

Campbellsville is scheduled to host MSC foe Cumberland University on Friday-Saturday, April 17-18. First pitch is scheduled for 6 and 3 p.m., respectively both days. All games will be live on the CU Sports Network – www.portal.stretchinternet.com/camp
