Softball maintains first place in MSC with sweep of Tigers

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. —Lady Tiger Softball rode a couple of eight-hit games, scoring winning runs in the sixth innings of both, as CU swept Georgetown on day 1 of a two-day, four-game series, 9-3, 5-3.

 


Campbellsville improved to 27-5 (19-1 MSC) with the wins, running its victory streak to 16 games. Georgetown falls to 14-12 (11-9 MSC).

Kristin Benton had two hits and four RBIs in the first game, the big blast coming on a grand slam in the bottom of a six-run sixth frame. Markie Smith had three RBIs with two hits, including a fifth inning home run after Georgetown had closed to within 3-2 on three CU errors.

Victoria Decker (15-2) pitched a three-hitter, striking out six and walking three. Jacqueline Roof, Haley Szpila, Erin Benton and Shelby Ray each hit safely in the game, Szpila's hit being a run-scoring double.

In game two, CU took an early 3-0 lead only to see it evaporate in the fifth inning when Georgetown used a Shelby Engle double to plate the tying runs.

Campbellsville got the game winner in the bottom of the sixth when Adrean Jordan led off with a single and Zatoria Hill, pinch running, scored on Breanna Scott's double. Markie Smith singled her home after Kristin Benton reached on a walk.

Neely Quint worked around nine hits and three walks to record her 13th win in 16 starts.

Scott led the eight-hit attack with three hits and three RBIs on doubles in the third and sixth innings. Jordan ended up with two hits and Roof, Smith and Szpila had one hit apiece.

Campbellsville will play host to Georgetown again Saturday, April 18 with a double-header. First pitch set to for noon and the game will be live on the CU Sports Network, www.portal.stretchinternet.com/camp. Also, head coach Shannon Wathen will be honored before the games for surpassing the 400-win milestone in just 13 years at CU. Pregame ceremonies will start at approximately, 11:45 a.m. ET.
