Tigers walk off using Cumberland University error

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILE, Ky. — (BOX SCORE) One of the easiest plays in baseball turned into a nightmare for the visiting Bulldogs of Cumberland University. Campbellsville won the first game of the series on a walk-off sacrifice bunt, 3-2 at HIG Field on Friday night.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Chris Allen led off with a bunt base hit. Everyone in both dugouts and the packed HIG Field stands knew what was coming next, but Cumberland University was unable to execute.

Miguel Solano laid down a sacrifice bunt but Stephen Fischer's throw sailed right past second baseman, Zach Cole's, glove and down the right field line. Allen scampered all the way around to score the game-winning run on the Cole error and was mobbed by teammates at home plate.

Closer Logan Truex (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after coming on in the eighth inning and pitching out of multiple jams. Fischer (2-7) picked up the loss for Cumberland University.

Fifteenth-ranked Campbellsville improved to 23-7 overall and 11-4 inside the Mid-South Conference. The Bulldogs fell to 16-25 and 8-7 inside conference play. The series doubleheader has been moved up to a 1:30 p.m. ET tomorrow at HIG Field.

"We squeaked one out tonight," said CU coach Beauford Sanders in his post-game radio interview. "Cumberland University is a team that is fighting for a top spot in the conference just like we are and it would have been a huge momentum boost for them to pull out the win tonight. But I give it to the guys for scrapin' and having a lot of energy throughout the entire game."

In the seventh inning, starting second baseman for Cumberland and leadoff hitter, Phil Stiles had to exit due to an injury and Zach Cole was his replacement. Stiles had started in all 41 games for the Bulldogs and that was a huge blow for Hall of Fame head coach Woody Hunt.

Campbellsville took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after a leadoff walk to Alex Scanlan. Allen sacrificed him over to second and Solano drove Scanlan in on a RBI-single to right field.

The Bulldogs tied it at one in the fifth inning after a leadoff hit-by-pitch came back to bite starter Mario Morales. After a single by Stiles, Hector Viera hit a long fly ball to center field to score Eddie McDaniels from third on a sacrifice fly.

After a leadoff error in the seventh inning for Cumberland University, the Bulldogs used small ball once again to move the runner into scoring position. Morales could not work himself out of the jam and gave way to Indalecio Romo. Viera made CU pay with the mishap and delivered an RBI-single to left field for the Bulldogs to take their first lead, 2-1.

Campbellsville answered in the bottom half after Scanlan came up big with a two-out RBI-single to right field scoring Ricky McColloch. Scanlan and McColloch led the Tigers at the plate going 2-for-3 and 3-for-4, respectively.

Truex came on in the eighth inning with runners on first and third and one out but struck out the Bulldogs next two batters to end that threat. He also did the same in the 10th inning. After CU's third defensive miscue, Cumberland had runners on first and third but a failed suicide squeeze ended up into an easy out for the Tigers. Truex struck out the next batter to end the threat and give Campbellsville all the momentum in the bottom half for the walk off victory.

Chris Allen, Miguel Solano, Carlos Torres, Garrett Everhart and Jaime Valle all had one hit apiece. Solano had two RBI to lead Campbellsville at the plate.
