Campbellsville (25-7, 13-4 MSC) moved into the top spot inside the Mid-South Conference after St. Catharine College lost two-of-three to Lindsey Wilson College. CU sits one full game ahead of the Patriots (12-5) and two games ahead of the Blue Raiders (11-6).
"We are in the drivers seat now," said CU head coach Beauford Sanders. "Our own destiny is in our hands and now we have to go out and take care of business against Pikeville. The guys have answered the call so far this season and are doing exactly what we are asking as a coaching staff. This was a huge series for us against a great Cumberland University team."
Game one: Campbellsville 7, Cumberland 0
Campbellsville scored a run in the final five innings and Nick Morehead (8-0) pitched a gem to get the Tigers started on a right note in the doubleheader sweep.
Garrett Everhart led the charge with two hits and drove in a run. Casey Scott, Carlos Torres, Alex Kline, Ricky McColloch and Richard Ramirez all recorded the other five hits for the Tigers.
Cumberland University did not help its cause and committed four errors. The Bulldogs have struggled all season and have recorded 70 errors compared to Campbellsville's 42.
Morehead led the charge from the mound, throwing eight scoreless innings of six-hit ball and striking out a season-high 11 batters. To start the game, Morehead had struck out seven of his first 11 batters faced and the Bulldogs were unable to make any adjustments.
Casey Congleton came in to finish the ninth inning and struck out two of the four batters faced. Clint Meadows (4-4) picked up the loss for Cumberland University. CU scattered seven hits and scored five runs (three earned) off the Bulldogs starter and then scored two more unearned runs against Austin Williams in the final two innings.
Game two: Campbellsville 7, Cumberland 6
Although game one was a blowout, game two was one for the ages.
Jaime Valle led off the eighth inning with a double to put the winning run on second base. After a Ricky McColloch groundout Alex Kline delivered the big blow to push the Tigers into first place inside the MSC.
Kline and the Tigers walked off for their second consecutive win in extra innings. The Tigers also won in extras in game one on Friday night, 3-2.
The Bulldogs jumped on Campbellsville starter Jake Pannunzio with two runs in the first inning but the Tigers answered with three in the third. CU recorded three doubles and two walks for their three runs.
The next two innings would be identical. Both teams scored one run in the fourth and two in the fifth but the Tigers took a 6-5 lead going into the final inning with the best closer in the MSC, Logan Truex, coming in to do what he does best.
After a leadoff error, Truex picked up consecutive outs but surrendered a single to Tyler Alford and then came the most controversial call of the afternoon. With runners on first and third and two outs, a routine ground ball was hit to Miguel Solano at second base but his flip to the bag was late.
That call forced the 25-year coaching veteran for the Tigers to become irate and Sanders ended up getting thrown out of the game - the first time since 2009. That play, though, lit a fire under the team and Kline answered the call to seal the series sweep in the bottom half of the inning.
Like game one, Truex (2-0) picked up the win for Campbellsville in extra innings. He went two innings allowing two hits and one unearned run.
Campbellsville will now host Brescia University on Tuesday, April 21 at 6 p.m. ET. The game can be watched live on www.portal.stretchinternet.com/camp.
