Scott and Ahrens lead Lady Tigers in first round of MSC

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — (BOX SCORE) Campbellsville moves on to the second round of the Mid-South Conference softball tournament with a 7-2 win over Shawnee State University.

 


CU (32-6) will play the winner of St. Catharine College and University of Pikeville at 4 p.m. CT at Michael O. Buchanon Park. The Patriots were winning, 4-0 in the fifth inning at the conclusion of CU's game.

The one-seeded Lady Tigers plated five runs in the second inning to break the game open. CU was led by freshman Brianna Scott, going 2-for-4 and driving in two runs.

Also, CU had a big first game from senior Kendyl Ahrens. She had two hits and drove in a career-high three runs from the eight-hole in the lineup.

Shawnee State scored its first run in the first but Scott and the Lady Tigers answered in the bottom half. Scott delivered a one-out triple to left field and was scored on a Kristin Benton fielder's choice.

Erin Benton led the second inning off with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Rebecca Miller. Miller reached base, though, on the misplayed grounder and Ahrens made the Bears pay. The senior from Poseyville, Ind. cleared the bases with her first triple as a Lady Tiger.

Shelby Ray kept the inning going with an RBI-single and Brianna Scott pushed the Lady Tigers ahead with her seventh home run of the season, 6-1.

Campbellsville scored another run in the third inning. After consecutive singles, Miller delivered another sacrifice bunt and Ahrens drove in her third run with an RBI-single to right field.

First-team All Mid-South Conference pitcher, Neely Quint (15-4) went the distance n the circle. She finished allowing eight Shawnee State hits and struck out two batters. Allie Chapman (6-13) suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs on seven hits.
