Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — (BOX SCORE) Campbellsville baseball was victim of Cumberland University's second Mid-South Conference tournament upset. The fifth-seeded Bulldogs defeated the top-seeded Tigers, 6-1.
Â
Cumberland University (20-29) gave Campbellsville's starting pitcher, Nick Morehead (9-1) his first loss of the season. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the third inning and that was all they would need to knock off the Tigers (28-10).
Morehead gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out three Bulldog batters. Casey Congleton pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings, before giving way to Chris Tuma.
Tuma surrendered the sixth Cumberland run after allowing a double to lead off the ninth and balked the runner to third. Ryan Simmons singled home the sixth run and Cumberland starter Clint Meadows dashed the Tigers' hopes of any comeback.
Meadows (3-2) kept the Campbellsville bats silent for the majority of the game. The Tigers scattered four hits and scored one run in the fourth inning but could not extend Meadows' pitch count. Meadows finished the complete-game victory with 104 pitches through nine innings.
Alex Scanlan doubled down the left field line to lead off the fourth frame and scored on a Carlos Torres single. Ricky McColloch and Garrett Everhart were the only other Tigers to record hits for Campbellsville.
The top of the order did most of the damage for Cumberland. The first four hitters went 7-for-15 and drove in all five Bulldog runs.
Campbellsville will now play two-seed St. Catharine College Friday, May 1 at 10 a.m. ET at Bowling Green Ball Park. The game will be streamed live on the Mid-South Conference Sports Network – HERE.
