Patriots knock CU out of MSC Tournament, 5-3

Box Score

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — (BOX SCORE) St. Catharine College knocked out the No. 1 seed Campbellsville Tigers in the losers bracket of the Mid-South Conference tournament, 5-3, on Friday morning at Bowling Green Ball Park.

It is the sixth-straight season, the MSC Regular Season champion has been knocked out of the conference tournament early.

Campbellsville led 3-1 but the Patriots sparked a three-run eighth inning to take their first lead, 4-3.

Drew Kissel led off the eighth with a single and Alfredo Bohorquez and Harold Diaz followed suit with singles as well. Reliever Logan Truex, who came on in the seventh inning with two outs, struck out Dominique Guevara but surrendered a two-run single to Francisco Gonzales.

Jake Pannunzio relieved Truex and was called for a balk on an attempted pickoff throw to first base. The Patriots scored another run to take a 5-3 lead.

Carlos Torres led off the eighth inning with a single and SCC coach and CU alum, Luther Bramblett, made a pitching change, going to Steven Borkowski. Borkowski, who threw a complete game no-hitter in yesterdays win for SCC, shut the Tigers down in the final two innings.

The only noise Campbellsville was able to make in the final two innings came off the bat of Ricky McColloch in the eighth inning. The senior from Sonora, Calif., pelted a deep fly ball to left field but Nick Rosso made the catch with his back touching the wall.

Junior Brandon Christiansen led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a two-RBI single in the second inning and his first home run as a Tiger in the fourth. Casey Scott and Garrett Everhart also went 2-for-3 and both scored runs on the Christiansen double.

The Tigers could not preserve the gem pitched by starter Mario Morales. Morales went 6.2 innings, allowing only four hits and one run. He also struck out five Patriots.

Truex (2-1) picked up the loss, throwing 0.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on four Patriot hits.

St. Catharine started Daniel Lerma evened his record to 3-3 on the season and Borkowski picked up his second save.

Eighteenth-ranked Campbellsville (28-11) will now have to wait and see where they end up in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll. The Tigers are expected to make the NAIA Opening Round and qualifiers will be announced on Friday, May 8 at 4 p.m. ET.

St. Catharine (34-14) will now play the winner of Shawnee State and Georgetown College tonight at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. local time.
