Lady Tigers avoid elimination with 5-1 win over IWU

Box Score

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. —(BOX SCORE) Haley Szpila's two-run single gave Campbellsville the runs it needed today as the Lady Tigers avoided elimination on the second day of the 2015 NAIA Softball Championship Opening Round, beating Indiana Wesleyan 5-1.

CU (35-9) plays again at 5:00 today in a second elimination game against Rio Grande, the team that sent the Lady Tigers to the elimination bracket with a come-from-behind 5-4 win on opening day.

Szpila and Kristin Benton provided four of the Lady Tigers' seven hits. Szpila lofted a pitch to right center after Shelby Ray had walked and Rebecca Miller and Brianna Scott singled to load the bases. Benton's two-out single then scored two more runs, giving CU a 4-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Victoria Decker pitched a no-hitter through three innings, but required relief help from Neely Quint in the top of the fourth after issuing two consecutive walks to lead off the frame. Quint came in and Wesleyan (47-12) loaded the bases on an error at third. Quint then hit Kelsey Myers with a pitch to score the Wildcats' only run.

Quint (17-5) did not give up a hit in four innings of work, striking out two. She pitched three 1-2-3 innings to seal the win.

Campbellsville got a gift insurance run in the fifth when Kennedy Shutter, running for Miller, who had walked, benefitted from a wild throw to second after she had overrun the bag. Shutter scored on that throw.

Markie Smith also had a hit in Campbellsville's seven-single attack.
