Kline's crazy play gives Tigers win in opening round, 6-2

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — (BOX SCORE) Campbellsville scored four runs in the eighth inning and pulled the first upset in the Faulkner bracket of the NAIA Opening Round, beating 11th-ranked Northwood University, 6-2.

Three-seed Campbellsville (29-11) will now face the winner of one-seed Faulkner and four-seed Lyon College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET at Harrison Field. The Faulkner-Lyon game was scheduled to play directly after the conclusion of the Tigers' game but was in a rain delay.

Tomorrow's second-round game can be heard live on the CU Sports Network – www.portal.stretchinternet.com/camp starting at 3:45 p.m. ET.

Campbellsville's Alex Kline cleared the bases with a two-RBI single to centerfield in the eighth inning but a crazy turn of events allowed Kline to come all the way around and score himself.

Casey Scott, Carlos Torres and Ricky McColloch all reached base before Kline delivered the single scoring Scott and Torres. The centerfielder for Northwood, Casey Mullennix, airmailed a throw over the third baseman trying to cut-down McColloch, but allowed the third run to score on the play. The catcher, Carlos Contreras then followed suit with an errant throw to third base allowing Kline to come all the way around to score after the single.

The Tigers took a 6-2 lead but the Seahawks did not give up in the bottom half of the eighth. Reliever Casey Congleton allowed three consecutive singles to load the bases before being pulled for Mario Morales. The junior from Riverside, Calif. came into the bases-loaded jam and struck out two and recorded a fly out to end the final threat from Northwood.

Congleton (1-0) picked up the win and Morales (1) recorded his first save. Nick Morehead started the game for Campbellsville and finished throwing 4.1 innings allowing five hits and one earned run. Morales struck out three batters to seal the victory for Campbellsville.

The Tiger pitching staff worked out of major jams four times. In the first, third and fifth innings, CU picked up double plays to end the innings. And the fourth came by way of Morales working out of the bases loaded jam with zero outs.

Andrew Caraveo (6-2) fell victim to his second loss of the season, allowing the big inning for Campbellsville. Steven Bruce started the game for the Seahawks and finished with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings.

Carlos Torres led Campbellsville with two hits and put CU on the board, 1-0 with an RBI-single in the first inning. Kline also had a two-hit game, going 2-for-4.

Miguel Solano, Chris Allen and Gentry Kinsella also picked up one hit in the opening game of the tournament. Allen delivered a sacrifice fly to knot the game at two in the seventh inning before the four-run eighth.
