COLUMBIA Ky. –  Campbellsville rallied from one set down against Brenau College and salvaged a split of two matches today on the second day of the Lindsey Wilson College Classic.
The Lady Tigers were defeated in the afternoon match by Indiana Kokomo, 3-0 (29-27, 25-19, 25-23), and then rode the strong left arm of senior Jana Kortas for a four-set win over Brenau, 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-22).
Kortas ended the day with 34 kills (19 and 15) to lead Campbellsville (2-3, 1-0 MSC).
Kokomo 3, Campbellsville 1
In the first set Campbellsville had a 9-0 run to go up 20-15. It was nip and tuck until the final rallies when CU committed two errors to aid a 29-27 loss.
In the middle of the second set, CU and Kokomo traded 5-0 runs, but the Lady Tigers couldn't gain any traction, falling 25-19.
In the third and final set, it was point-for-point down the stretch. After Kokomo went on a 5-0 run, putting them up 20-17, CU would never regain the lead, losing the set and the match 25-23.
Jana Kortas had 19 kills followed Brooklyn Bowling's seven. Inoa Fields recorded 32 assists.
On defense, Jessie Pendleton had 26 digs. Chanel Raymundo, Kortas, Fields and Marcella Compeau followed in pursuit, with 10, 9, 7 and 7, respectively.
Campbellsville 3, Brenau 1
CU started the first set on hot 5-0 run, but the Lady Tigers couldn't hold off the late 5-0, and 6-0 runs in the final moments, dropping the first set 25-22.
The Lady Tiger quickly regained composure to not ensure the same fate as the previous set. In the second, CU never lost the lead using a combination of kills from Annija Abolina, Bowling and Kortas, winning 25-21.
In the third set, CU was tied 3-3, but the Lady Tigers never looked back ending the match on a 22-10 run for a 25-13 win.
CU closed out the match in a fourth set that was full of rallies and seven lead changes. But the Lady Tigers dashed any dreams of Brenau winning with Kortas' final kill to complete the match, 25-22.
Kortas led the Lady Tigers with 15 kills but Abolina followed closely with 12. Fields finished with her second-highest assist mark of the season with 42.
The defensive campaign was led by Raymundo and Pendleton both digging nine.
Campbellsville (2-3,1-0) will play its last match of the Lindsey Wilson College Classic against Grace College tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 29. Game time is set for 11 a.m. ET. Fans can follow live stats, HERE.
