CAMPBELLSVILLE Ky. – The Tigers commanded the stage in their season home opener against Grace College today, defeating the Lancers 3-0.
Although the Tigers dominated the possession, too many opportunities were missed, according to CU coach Adam Preston. His Tigers had 26 shots, 13 were on goal. But he was still pleased with the season opener.
"We talk about the steps we need to take to be great, we aren't there yet but we want to be great in November and December," said Preston. "If we do that we have to take every day one step at a time, and I think today we took that first step."
In the first half, CU monopolized possession of the ball and collected 16 shots, five on goal. In the 34th minute the 2014 Mid-South Conference player of the year, Marcelo Petit connected off the rebound of a Jose Campuzano's shot to put the Tigers up 1-0.
In the 71st minute junior Guilhermo Cheng scored a goal from a Diego Morales assist. It was Cheng's eighth score of his career and Morales' first assist at CU.
Six minutes later Morales did it again, assisting Petit in his second goal, the 24th of his career.
Gonzalo Sapena recorded seven saves in the shutout win, his first match in goal for the Tigers.
Petit led the Tigers with six shots - four on goal and scoring on two. Junior forward, Campuzano recorded five shots, three on goal also fellow teammate, Alex Ryan had five shots, two on goal. Cheng finished with the lone shot and goal.Â
The Tigers finished with 26 shots, 13 on goal. The Grace College Lancers finished with 11 total shots, 10 of them being on goal.
Campbellsville (1-0, 0-0 MSC) will host Kentucky Christian University (1-0) on Thursday, Sept. 3. Game time is set to start at 7 p.m. ET.Â
