Lobulu's late goal propels Tigers over St. Catharine

SPRINGFIELD, Ky. —  Junior Yona Lobulu scored in the 81st minute to break a scoreless tie and Campbellsville held on to beat St. Catharine 1-0 in a emotional game for the Tigers.

Lobulu received a corner kick from senior Gabriel DeFreitas and capitalized late in the match to break a two-game losing streak for the Tigers.

"It was an emotional night for us," said Preston. "We have a couple injuries but the guys stepped up when we needed them. Yona scored a beautiful goal late in the game but he was great all night. He scored but also shut down their attacks."

Outside of Lobulu, the Tigers' picked up a huge game from goalkeeper Gonzalo Sapena. Sapena only finished the night with six saves but all were at huge parts of the match.

"Gonzalo has been consistent and he is learning," said Preston. "It's his first year and first few games. We are asking a lot out of him to step into the net and shut down teams. He has been consistent all season. That's the biggest thing we ask of him. With a goalkeeper it's about keeping the easy goals out of the net and making one big save a game."

Both teams were neck-and-neck throughout the first half. Campbellsville was unable to break through the St. Catharine defense, recording five shots compared to the Patriots' six.

In the second half, the Patriots still outshot the Tigers seven to six but only one was on goal for SCC.

Campbellsville finished the night with only two shots on goal with the biggest coming from Lobulu in the 81st minute. The other came from Marcelo Petit in the first half.

Campbellsville will take a week off from competition before traveling to Portsmouth, Ohio with a conference matchup against Shawnee State on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET
