Men's soccer stays perfect in MSC play with win over Bears

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The Tigers used a strong second half performance today to surge past the Shawnee State Bears, 3-1.

Campbellsville (6-2, 3-0 MSC), which is receiving votes in the NAIA, remains perfect in conference play after this afternon's win.

"We are happy with our result today," said assistant coach Alex Adams. "It is always tough to play at Shawnee State, being such a long trip for us. They're very good at making it hard to win, so a conference win away from home is great. We are continuing to look at this season one step at a time and will grow as a team as we refocus for Oakland City next Monday."

The Tigers and the Bears struggled in the first half, during which 10 combined fouls were called. CU recorded six shots with four on goal while SSU only shot twice neither on goal.

Three minutes into the second half junior midfielder Ryan Foster changed the pace of the game. Foster scored his first goal of the season off a rebound that slid low and right past Brandon Pfeiffer, Shawnee State keeper.

In the 53rd minute the Bears answered with a goal of their own from Martyn Sayer, tying the game 1-all.

Five minutes later Marcelo Petit scored one of his two goals of the afternoon from 22-yards out. Foster recorded his fourth assist on the season on the feed to Petit.

With a little under two minutes left to play, Petit squashed any dreams that the Bears might have had of coming back, pushing the score to 3-1 with the final dagger. Petit recorded his ninth goal of the season and 31st of his career.

Campbellsville ended the game with 20 shots, 14 on goal. The Bears recorded 10 shots and three on goal. SSU's Pfeiffer made 11 saves. Gonzalo Sapena recorded two saves in net for Campbellsville.

CU will return to Finley Stadium on Monday, Sept. 28 for a match against Oakland City University in a non-conference double-header. The Lady Tigers start at 6 p.m. with the Tigers to follow at 8 p.m. Live video will be available on the CU Sports Network - HERE.
