Kortas leads Lady Tigers to victory over Cumberland

LEBANON, Ky. – (BOX SCORE) The Lady Tigers used 49 kills to dictate the outcome of tonight's victory over Cumberland University in four sets (25-18, 17-25, 25-14, 25 -20).

Campbellsville (9-5, 3-2 MSC) is on a five-match win streak — its the largest since 2013. Cumberland University falls to 7-6 overall and 2-3 inside the conference.


Lone senior, Jana Kortas led the way with 17 kills on only 27 attempts – good for a .593 hitting percentage. Annija Abolina followed closely behind with 14 kills.

The Lady Tigers and the Bulldogs battled back and fourth during the beginning of the first set, tying the score seven times. CU took advantage of Cumberland errors and went on a 10-4 run to close the set out.

In tonight's victory, Campbellsville only committed 13 errors — eight of those came in the second set. The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead and didn't look back. The Lady Tigers never held the lead.

With the match tied 1-1, the Lady Tigers went to work. They started the third set with a kill from Julia Fonseca and a service ace from Inoa Fields. A 6-1 run forced the Bulldogs to call a timeout. After back-to-back kills from Marcella Compeau and Abolina, Cumberland took another timeout, this time with CU leading 16-7. Late in the set, the Bulldogs rallied with a 5-0 run but CU smashed those dreams with a huge block from Mirela Vasconselos and back-to-back kills from Maria Coelho and Vasconselos.

In the fourth and final set, CU stuttered for only a moment. Trailing 11-7, Coach Amy Zink called a timeout. Coming out of the break CU went on a 5-0 run forcing the Bulldogs to take another timeout. In the teens, the Lady Tigers and Bulldogs rallied but CU never lost the lead; using a kill by Kortas to end the game, 25-20.

Jessie Pendleton recorded 13 digs on the defensive end to lead Campbellsville.

The reining Mid-South Conference Setter of the Week Inoa Fields had 45 assists — 95 percent of tonight's total. Fields averages 10.45 assists per set — which would be good for sixth all-time in a single season.
