BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — Campbellsville (9-7, 3-2 MSC) played seven close sets, but still lost its opening two matches today at the Olivet Nazarene Tournament.
In the opener, the Lady Tigers fell behind 6-0 early in both the first and the third sets to Cornerstone (8-4). They were able to come back, but couldn't make a play late that would turn the tide.
The Golden Eagles broke open a 15-15 tie in the second set with a 7-1 run and CU could never get closer than five points the rest of the way.
Cornerstone, which is receiving votes in the latest NAIA poll, made just enough plays to slip by 26-24, 25-19 and 25-23.
Annija Abolina led CU with 13 kills. Inoa Fields barely missed a double-double with 32 assists and nine digs. Jessie Pendleton led the team in digs with 24.
Judson (9-4) was able to hold Campbellsville at bay just enough to pull off a four-set win, 25-20, 25-21, 19-25 and 25-22.
Campbellsville finished with more kills than Judson (43-42) but recorded five more attack errors. The Lady Tigers fell behind by staying aggressive with their serves. CU finished with 10 service errors compared to Judson's six. Also, Judson's front line gave the Lady Tigers fits, finishing with 28 total blocks compared to only 10 for CU.
Jana Kortas led the charge with 17 kills in the second match. She was followed by Abolina, who finished with a double-double (10 kills and 11 digs). Pendleton led the charge with a match-high 17 digs.
Fields also dished out 37 assists in the loss.
