Campuzano's hat trick leads to Tigers' 5-1 victory

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY. —  The Tigers were hot out of the gate tonight against Calumet College of St. Joseph as Marcelo Petit scored a goal within the first nine seconds of the match, helping Campbellsville to a 5-1 win at Finley Stadium.

Petit was supported by Jose Campuzano's first career hat trick. It was Campuzano's first, second and third goals of his career as a Tiger. In the 13th and 18th minutes he recorded back-to-back goals. His first goal was a header off a rebound and his second goal was assisted by Shane Buchanan. In the 44th minute he recorded his third and final goal, booting one in from 55 yards out over multiple defenders.

Daniel Nimmo recorded his second career goal in the 22nd minute off a corner kick from Gabriel DeFreitas.

The win moves CU to 3-0, the fourth straight year that the Tigers have started a season 3-0.

Alex Ryan made a hard slide tackle in the 13th minute and received a red card. He sat out the rest of the game and will not be eligible to play in the first Mid-South conference matchup of the year next Tuesday.

Being a player down after the 13th minute mark didn't hamper the Tigers' momentum. Campbellsville documented all five goals in the the first half. They had a total of 13 shots, 11 in the first half — seven on goal. Calumet College of St. Joseph shot a total of 14 shots and eight on goal.

Nick Barango recorded the Crimson Waves first and solo goal of the night in the 83rd minute.

Gonzalo Sapena allowed only one goal in 90 minutes. He was credited with seven saves. In the two games Sapena has played, he averages seven saves per game.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday night, Sept. 8 for a MSC doubleheader against University of the Cumberlands (Ky.). Game time is set for 8 p.m. ET directly following the women's match at Finely Stadium. Fans can watch the game live - www.portal.stretchinternet.com/camp/
