CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — (BOX) With their full compliment of players available for the first time this season, the Lady Tigers made short work of Pikeville tonight in the Powell Athletic Center, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-19.
CU (4-4, 2-1 MSC) pulled the three-set win in a little over an hour, even while picking up 16 service errors against eight service aces.
Mirela Vasconselos (9) and Julia Fonseca (4), who had to be held out of play while being cleared by the NAIA, contributed 13 kills to Campbellsville's 46-kill attack. By comparison, Pikeville (3-7, 0-3 MSC) was able to post 22 kills.
Campbellsville is undefeated in 12 matches against the Bears, having dropped two sets since 2007.
CU pulled away in the first set when Jana Kortas' kill gave the Lady Tigers an 18-10 lead. After a long rally on set point, Maria Coelho's kill proved to be the set winner.
Pikeville crawled back into set two after CU led 19-11, but Annija Abolina picked up to late kills to stave off any Bear rally for the 25-19 win.
The third set was much the same. Inoa Fields' service ace gave CU a 14-7 lead and another by Abolina put Campbellsville ahead 18-8. Pikeville would go on an 8-2 run before kills by Abolina and Fonseca gave CU the working margin it needed to close out the match.
Kortas led the team with 13 kills and got ample support from Vasconselos (9), Abolina (9) and Coelho (9). CU completed the match hitting a .308 attack percentage to Pikeville's .096.
Of the eight service aces, Fields led the way with three while Jessie Pendleton (2), Chanel Raymundo (2) and Abolina (1) completed the number. Fields was credited with 31 assists and Marcella Compeau's 12 digs led the team. Raymundo had nine digs and Fields and Pendleton had seven each.
Campbellsville stays in conference and hosts the University of the Cumberlands Thursday, Sept. 10 at 7:00 ET. A junior varsity match precedes the varsity at 5:00.
