Hot start to second half pushes CU past St. Catharine

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — A strong second-half propelled Campbellsville men's basketball past St. Catharine College tonight in the Powell Athletic Center, 90-79.

Coach Comments

It was another slow start for Campbellsville (17-5, 4-4 MSC). The Tigers struggled in the opening half, hitting 31 percent, while St. Catharine (5-14, 1-6 MSC) knocked down 40 percent. But CU took a 37-34 halftime lead.

Coming out of the break, CU caught fire, going on a 15-6 run capped by Hagen Tyler knocking down his second 3-pointer of the night. The Tyler triple gave Campbellsville its first double figure lead of 12 points, 52-40 with 16:14 left in the second period.

The Tigers ended up knocking down 10-of-12 from the floor to start the half, while Sekou Harris scored eight of his team-high 23 points. Elliott Young was also a spark off the CU bench — banging a 3 and hitting two contested layups – for seven of his 12 points.

The Tigers dominated the bench scoring with a 23-4 mark over St. Catharine, while CU's Rob Robinson also pitched in nine points.

St. Catharine, on the other hand, wasn't too shabby to start the half either, hitting 7-of-14 (50 percent). But the Patriots fell victim to eight second-half turnovers – four of those in a span of three minutes allowing Campbellsville to make its run.

Ron Scott made a pair of free throws with 11:17 left to give Campbellsville its largest lead of 13 points. But the scrappy St. Catharine ball club would not lay down. The Patriots would work the lead to as little as seven points five times but the Tigers would always have an answer.

Young nailed his second 3-pointer to push Campbellsville ahead by 13 points with 3:30 remaining, but once again the Tigers would go cold from the floor. CU did not score a field goal in the final 3:30 but knocked down 5-of-9 free throws to seal its 17th victory overall and get them back to .500 inside Mid-South Conference play.

Dii'jon Allen-Jordan led the Tigers in the paint, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for his NAIA-tying 10th double-double.

St. Catharine, which was led by Chris Johnson's 29 points, used its size in the paint to outscore Campbellsville 42-36. Brandon Bobb Jones finished with 20 points but fouled out with a few minutes remaining and Emory Bennett dropped in 16.

Campbellsville returns to Powell Athletic center on Thursday, Jan. 28, as the Tigers host Shawnee State University with the men's and women's doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. ET.
