Miracle wins Gold Medal at Dave Schultz Memorial

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Four women from the United States won close finals matches to claim gold medals on the final day of the 18th Dave Schultz Memorial International and Campbellsville's Kayla Miracle was one of the four.

The international gold medal is the first for Miracle at the Dave Schultz Memorial, which was held at the Olympic Training Center.

Miracle – who is sponsored by Sunkist Kids and wrestling at 58 KGs —  won all four matches with three coming by way of pins in one of the most prestigious international tournaments in the country. She made quick work of Panama's Vasques Zoraida with a pin in 1:13. Then Miracle had to take on her own USA teammates in three consecutive matches.

Miracle pinned Becka Leathers in 2:23 then also Jenna Burkert in 2:32 to set up the championship match against Randi Beltz of Titan Mercury WC. With the match tied at 4-4, Beltz scored two straight takedowns to lead 8-4 but Miracle made a huge comeback. She picked up two takedowns of her own, including one in the final 10 seconds to tie the match at eight – which would give her criteria. Beltz challenged the last takedown by Miracle and lost, giving a final point to Miracle at the end, 9-8.

"Right now I don't even know what to say. Today I felt like a different person," said Kayla Miracle. "I felt like everything is really starting to fall together and I was just in the zone. I'm happy with the result, but I have so much to work on before (WCWA) nationals and Olympic trials come around. I'm just so thankful for all the support everyone is showing me, it makes moments like this much more enjoyable."

"It was a great tournament overall," said coach Lee Miracle. "The caliber of athletes that you face here is amazing and to win a match can be extremely difficult. To win the whole tournament is an accomplishment that many elite-level American wrestlers never achieve.

"Kayla beat some world class athletes today. She is really improving every time she steps on the mat and is fun to watch."

Campbellsville also had four other Lady Tigers competing at the Dave Schultz. Michelle Organ and Hannah Gladden both picked up wins. Wrestling at 69 KG's, Organ made quick work by pinning Veronica Carlson in 51 seconds. She then lost her semifinals match to Forrest Molinari (Pin 3:57) and Katerina Lobsinger (Tech Fall 13-3).

"I thought (Michelle) Organ wrestled really well and showed that she belongs on the elite level," said Lee Miracle. "Beating Veronica Carlson the way she did was awesome. She was dominating Forest Molinari when she made a mistake and got pinned. She has the ability to win this tournament."

Gladden, who was wrestling at 63 KG's, fell in her first match to Amanda Hendley in 1:07 but then picked up a huge 5-4 win over Lorrie Ramos – assistant coach at rival University of the Cumberlands.

Gladden advanced through the consolation bracket but fell by tech fall 10-0 to Breanna Graham.

"Gladden had a big win over University of the Cumberlands Assistant Coach Lori Ramos," said Lee Miracle. "She avenged a loss from two weeks ago proving she belongs on the elite level."

Campbellsville also had two Lady Tigers compete at 58 KG's. Koral Sugiyama and Rosemary Flores (New York Athletic Club) both lost to Sally Roberts and Trinity Griffin  of the United States in the championship and consolation brackets.

"Flores and Sugiyama all gained valuable experience that I hope pays off in a couple weeks at WCWA Nationals," said Lee Miracle. "We were extremely blessed to come out of such a tough tournament injury free. I'm always worried about that this time of year being so close to WCWA Nationals."

The Lady Tigers return home to host University of the Cumberlands on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. ET. Coach Lee Miracle will also recognize his three seniors – Hanna Hall, Kasey Kruczek, and Michelle Organ.

Campbellsville will then have one more tune up at the Ferrum College Tournament in Ferrum, Va. before the WCWA National Championship in Oklahoma City, Okla. On Feb. 12-13.
