Lady Tigers earn matchup with No. 1 King at national duals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — After brushing off Missouri Baptist in their first-round match, 44-0, the Lady Tiger wrestlers worked their way into a semifinal matchup on Saturday with No. 1 King College after a 29-16 come-from-behind win over McKendree University today at the NWCA National Duals.

No. 5 Campbellsville picked up three forfeit wins to open the match with Missouri Baptist and rolled to the big win. Koral Sugiyama, Hannah Gladden and Kaitlyn Hill all had pins in the match.

But against McKendree it was a different story. The seventh-ranked Bearcats led 7-0 before Kait Fitzpatrick upset No. 5 Lindsey Spjut with a 3-1 decision at 116 pounds.

"I was extremely impressed with several of the individual efforts today," said coach Lee Miracle. " Kait Fitzpatrick continues to buy in to what I am teaching her and she is improving every outing."

Then in the 123-pound class, Kayla Miracle pinned No. 7 Megan Black at the 2:23 mark to give CU its first lead. Miracle, who came in ranked No. 1 at 130, cut weight and moved to wrestle this weekend at 123 pounds to make room for teammate Koral Sugiyama. The move paid off, as Sugiyama, who ranks No. 4 at 130, produced a tech fall over No. 5 Gabrielle Weyhuch.

"Kayla made a huge weight cut to cover the team at 123," said Miracle. "It was incredibly selfless and truly inspiring. Her pin over Black from McKendree was huge for us. Sugiyama continues to impress me."

Then in the 136-pound class, No. 7 Rosemary Flores pinned No. 9 Jasmine Bailey before things got testy at 143 and 155.

After 2015 WCWA All-American's Hannah Gladden and Hanna Hall fell in consecutive matches, Michelle Organ, wrestling at 170, cut off any comeback hopes with a 13-2 tech fall over Alexandrea Glaude. McKendree forfeited Tiaira Scott's 191-pound match.

"Flores wrestled great avenging a previous loss against Bailey with a pin. Organ and Hill both went undefeated today as well," said Miracle.

"The ladies really came together and fought for each other against McKendree. I am extremely proud of them. We really believe that we are one of the best teams in the country right now that we are at about 90 percent. Unfortunately we were at 70% the first half of the season and that caused us to be seeded fifth. God willing, tomorrow can be a historic day for our program. We are going into this battle with King confident, healthy, and believing in each other. We will find out how good we are tomorrow."

Campbellsville and King square off tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. on Mat 9 at Memorial Coliseum.
