Yamauchi sparks eighth-ranked Tigers past No. 23 Cumberland

LEBANON, Tenn. — With No. 8 Campbellsville and No. 23 Cumberland University scoreless through almost 73 minutes of play, both teams caught fire late but the Tigers found their groove to upend the Phoenix, 3-1.

The win gives the Tigers (9-0-1, 2-0-1) a little payback after Cumberland (8-4-1, 4-1-0 MSC) won the 2015 Mid-South Conference tournament last season on PKs. That match on Nov. 6, 2015 was a 1-1 draw and it looked as if today's would be another low-scoring affair until Pak Hei Chan checked into the match in the 73rd minute.

After playing 21 minutes in the first half, Chan checked into the match for the second time in the 73rd and broke the scoreless draw just 30 seconds later. Chan received a pass from Ignacio Mangada from the right side to finish far post.

But that was the first of four goals in the final 17 minutes. The Phoenix answered right back just three-plus minutes later as Elliot Goodwin finished a corner kick from Brian McNamara.

The Tigers wouldn't let the 1-1 tie stand for long, though, as this time it was Yamauchi putting CU ahead for good. He scored his fifth goal of the season with a shot just outside the 18-yard box in the 79th minute.

Campbellsville gave itself a little breathing room in the 86th, as Yamauchi found Mangada for a 1-v-1 breakaway for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Yamauchi has shined in the Tigers' previous two games, scoring a combined four goals and assisting on two.

The Phoenix had multiple opportunities throughout but goalkeeper Gonzalo Sapena kept Cumberland at bay. He finished the day with five saves on 13 total shots and six on goal for the Phoenix.

Campbellsville led the match with 15 shots – eight on goal – and Bennet Strutz finished with five saves.

The Tigers are now tied with Lindsey Wilson College atop the Mid-South Conference standings with matching 2-0-1 records. Cumberland is third at 4-2-0 and Shawnee State is fourth at 2-1-0.

Campbellsville returns home on Saturday, Oct. 15 to host Shawnee State University at 9 p.m. ET on Homecoming 2016 – Best of the Bluegrass. Live video and stats will be available on www.CampbellsvilleTigers.com
