Lady Tigers sweep tri-match over Saint Thomas & Bryan College

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Lady Tiger volleyball swept a pair of matches today over Saint Thomas University and Bryan College in Powell Athletic Center.

In the tri-match with Lindsey Wilson College, the Lady Tigers started the day with a 26-24, 25-20, 25-20 win over Saint Thomas and then went on to defeat the Lions, 25-1, 29-27, 25-19. Lindsey Wilson College swept Saint Thomas for third match.

Campbellsville (19-8) vs. Saint Thomas (19-4)

Led by Julia Fonseca and Maria Coelho with 11 kills, the Lady Tigers finished with a hitting percentage of .264 compared to .167 for the Bobcats. Coelho hit an astonishing .458, while Fonseca was right behind her at .391.

In the first set, Saint Thomas jumped out to a 14-8 lead but Lady Tigers would slowly chip away and ended up tying the match at 19, 20, and 21. A pair of blocks by Fonseca sparked the Lady Tigers to a 23-21 lead by the Bobcats wouldn't go down easy.

After a kill by Annija Abolina tying the set at 24, CU took advantage of a pair of attacking errors by Saint Thomas to win, 26-24.

It was close once again in the second set. With the match tied at 19, the Lady Tigers would go on a 6-1 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Fonseca finished with three kills in that rally, as Abolina and Katie Johnson added a point as well.

Like the first two games, the third wasn't much different. Tied at 16-all, Campbellsville finished on a 9-5 run winning 25-20. CU ended the third game on a 4-0 run with Coelho and Johnson finishing with kills.

Inoa Fields delivered 34 assists in the first match, while Jessie Pendleton and Savannah Moss had double-digit digs with 16 and 12, respectively.

Campbellsville (20-8) vs. Bryan College (15-15)

In the third and final match of the day, Campbellsville got down early in each of the three sets but would rally for the sweep.

Down 18-13, the Lady Tigers went on a 12-3 run to take a 1-0 lead. With Jessie Pendleton serving and the match tied at 19, she delivered a pair of service aces, while Abolina and Johnson followed with kills. After two-straight attacking errors, Abolina and Johnson once again went back-to-back to seal the first-set victory, 25-21.

The second set was a nail-bitter that went to extra points but ended up going the Lady Tigers' way. CU dug itself another hole, 13-5, but ended up rallying late. CU went on a quick 4-0 run to cut the lead to 13-9 after Coelho sparked the Lady Tigers with a pair of kills and Jessie Stone delivered two-straight aces.

Campbellsville would tie the match at 20 and ended up taking its first lead, 23-22. Both teams would go back and fourth until Abolina delivered a kill and Hannah Smith had one of the 17 attacking errors for Bryan, giving CU the second game, 29-27.

Just like the first match, each set was very similar. Bryan College attempted to keep the Lady Tigers from their seventh sweep of the season but CU would prevail late once again.

The Lions took advantage with nine blocks overall in the match and used those to take a commanding 8-2 lead. But it was Campbellsville rallying once more going on a 11-4 run and earning their first lead of the third game, 13-12.

Both teams would go back and fourth again but with the match tied at 17, Campbellsville sprinted to the finish. The Lady Tigers would end the match on an 8-2 run, winning the third game 25-19.

Abolina led the Lady Tigers with 15 kills while Coelho added 11. Coelho also added 11 digs for one of two double-doubles for CU. Fields dished out 35 assists and had 11 digs for the second double-double. Two other Lady Tigers finished with double-digit digs – Pendleton led CU with 14 digs, while Katie Johnson finished with 10.

Overall in the match, CU used 11 service aces to their full advantage trying a season-high.
