MSC Champs secure first undefeated regular season in CU history

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — For the first time in Campbellsville University athletics history, a team has finished the regular season without a blemish on its schedule. Tonight CU men's soccer held on late to defeat University of the Cumberlands, 1-0, to finish the regular season with a mark of 13-0-2.

In addition, the win also secures at least a share of the Mid-South Conference regular season crown, as Lindsey Wilson (who is a ½ game back) will finish the regular season tomorrow versus Shawnee State.

No. 7 Campbellsville seals the Nos. 1 or 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament hosted at Warren East High School in Bowling Green, Ky. starting on Friday, Nov. 4. The Tigers will either draw nine-seeded Life University or the No. 8 seed University of Pikeville in the first round depending on the LWC-SSU match on Saturday.

Tonight, though, it was a battle for the entire 90 minutes of play. Joey Ferguson recorded the Patriots' first shot on goal but Gonzalo Sapena was there for one of his five saves. After the one shot by Cumberlands, the Tigers started to find their groove. In the 20th minute, Pak Hei Chan and Lucas Freitas both had opportunities to score but the back-up goalkeeper for Cumberlands, Anthony Madaferri, was there for the stops. Madaferri finished the night with four saves…. But he needed five.

Campbellsville entered the match ranking No. 1 in the NAIA by averaging 4.57 goals per game but tonight they only needed one. In the 43rd minute it was Guilherme Fanck heading in a Rickard Hallin pass for what ended up being the game-winner.

The second half saw multiple opportunities for CU to extend its lead but the Patriots narrowly missed the equalizer in the final 30 seconds of place. Zach Wallace received a cross just inside the 18-yard box but his missile missed just high and wide to allow the Tigers to run out the clock.

CU finished the night with 15 shots and only five on goal, while Cumberlands had eight shots – five on goal.

The shutout is the 12th of the season for CU – which ties the most in the NAIA with No. 5 Northwestern Ohio.

Cumberlands finishes the regular season with a 5-10 overall record and 3-3-1 inside conference play. The Patriots earned the No. 4 seed and will play Shawnee State or Georgetown in the opening round of the tournament next week.

More information for the conference tournament will be released next week with seeds, pairings and game times.
