GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Lady Tiger volleyball matches its season-high five game win streak with a 3-1 victory of Taylor University today in the Boneyard Brawl hosted by Georgetown College.
Campbellsville won in four sets over the Trojans, 25-22, 25-20, 18-25 and 25-18.
The Lady Tigers improve their record to 23-8 overall – the most wins in a season since 2013 when CU went 29-12.
Even though CU won in four sets today, it didn't come easy. Campbellsville trailed in the first set 16-13 forcing coach
Amy Zink to call her first timeout. But out of the timeout CU rallied by going on a 7-2 run to take a 20-18 lead and the Trojans decided to take their first timeout.
Taylor knotted the opening set at 20 and again at 21 but it was Mario Coelho and
Inoa Fields with two kills a piece to end the Trojans' threat, 25-23.
The second set was also back-and-fourth until the very end. With the Lady Tigers leading 13-11, Taylor called a timeout and rallied once more after the break but were unable to take a lead themselves. Campbellsville ended up leading 23-20 before
Annija Abolina and
Julia Fonseca delivered consecutive kills giving CU a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was a different story for Campbellsville. The Lady Tigers led briefly 10-9 but the Trojans doubled CU up by going on a 16-8 run and stealing the third set, 25-18.
The fourth set was much like the second. Campbellsville came out hot by going on a 11-5 run to start the frame forcing Taylor to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Trojans rallied, though, bringing the CU lead to just one, 13-12, with a 7-2 run.
After a Campbellsville timeout, the Lady Tigers responded with authority. CU scored five of the next six points and Taylor was forced to call a timeout to end the rally. Out of that break, the CU lead would not get smaller than three points, as Coelho delivered a pair of kills to end the match.
