CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — For the seventh time in nine games, No. 8 Campbellsville University men's soccer pitched a shutout, dominating rival Georgetown College, 8-0.
For the second-straight year, the CU Tigers put up big numbers over Georgetown. Last season, CU won 11-0 over GC.
Tonight, the domination started early and continued throughout the entire 90 minutes. Lead by
Yudai Yamauchi's first-career hat trick, Campbellsville improves its record to 8-0-1 and 1-0-1 in Mid-South Conference play. The Tigers still own the NAIA's longest unbeaten streak at 22-0-3.
Campbellsville came out of the gates running like seasoned thoroughbreds tonight. In a span on nine minutes, CU put up three scores before Georgetown knew what hit them.
The scoring started in the 10
th minute with
Ignacio Mangada scoring his team-leading sixth goal off a header - assist from
Lucas Freitas. The second goal was all
Pak Hei Chan. He crossed a couple defenders and found space to finish past GC's Matthew Oster, pushing CU's lead to 2-0.
The third goal was a beauty –
Rickard Hallin found Yamaguchi with a cross inside the box capping off CU's third goal in nine minutes.
In the first half CU dominated the possession by recording 18 shots – nine on goal compared to Georgetown's one.
The second half saw much of the same success, as it took all of 55 seconds for
Joao Gomiero to add to CU's lead, 5-0. Then the fireworks took off from 53 yards out. Senior
Ross Lindsay took a chance on Oster moving away from goal and capitalized with a 53-yard chip shot for his fifth score of the season.
For the second time tonight, CU scored in bunches but this time in the 62
nd and 63
rd minutes, respectively.
Guilherme Fanck beat Oster lower-90 and then assisted on Yamauchi's second goal of the night just one minute later pushing CU's lead to 7-0.
Griffin Smith took over for Oster in goal for Georgetown but that didn't matter to Yamauchi, as he capped off his hat trick in the 86
th minute.
Overall, Campbellsville finished with a season-high 40 shots and 19 on goal. The duo of Oster and Griffin finished with 11 saves, while CU's
Gonzalo Sapena finished with a pair of saves on the lone Georgetown attempts.
Campbellsville will now travel to No. 23 Cumberland University on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. ET. Live video and stats will be available on CampbellsvilleTigers.com.
