CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — The first tournament of the new season for Campbellsville University bass fishing was right in its backyard, as the Tigers hosted the Battle of the Bluegrass on Green River Lake and finished in second place by just 0.40 lbs.
Campbellsville, which won the 2015 title and earned the rights to host the traveling trophy for the Commonwealth, had 10 boats in the field. The championship trophy is determined by the top two teams from their respective schools and Campbellsville was led by duo's of Michael Scaggs/Luke Patterson and
Mason Sapp/
Travis Hunt.
Scaggs and Patterson, both newcomers to the program this season, finished runner-up individually, with a five-fish limit of 11.19 lbs. Sapp and Hunt caught three early keepers before 9 a.m. ET this morning for a total of 10.36 lbs. to finish in fourth place individually.. The top two teams for CU - Scaggs/Patterson and Sapp/Hunt - combined to lead the Tigers to a second place finish with a combined total of 21.55 lbs - just 0.40 lbs. out of first place.
Morehead State won the Battle of the Bluegrass, as Ethan Raliegh and Clay Johnson reeled in four fish totaling over 15.16 lbs. Johnson also finished with a $300 Big Fish prize weighing in at 5.45 lbs. Since the championship trophy is determined by the top two teams from their respective schools, Raliegh and Johnson teamed up with Mason Baker and Marquzf, who reeled in 6.83 lbs., to total 21.99 lbs.
Individually for Campbellsville, Adam Carmon and Grant Adams finished in fifth place with five fish weighing in at 10.27 lbs.
Rounding out Campbellsville's boats in the field –
Nick Ratliff and Ben Riggs (4 – 8.07 lbs.),
Austin Moore and
Dakota Cantrell (5 – 6.68 lbs.), Trevor Sagrecy and Abby Greynolds (3 – 4.56 lbs.), Colby Hays and Aaron Halcomb (2 – 2.15 lbs.).
With a harsh wind coming out of the north today, a few boats were unlucky and didn't get a bite. Both teams of
Jacob Smith/
Justin Mayfield and Tristan Raines/ Levi Neathery were fishless on Saturday.
The Battle of the Bluegrass will be hosted by Morehead State with a location to be determined next August.
