Lady Tigers win five-set thriller over Cumberland in MSC Tourney

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Lady Tiger volleyball had to overcome a poor hitting night but rallied in the middle sets to outlast the Cumberland University Phoenix in the Mid-South Conference quarterfinal match.

Three-seed Campbellsville (25-11) had two sub-par sets but was able to hang on late winning, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 12-25, 15-11. The Lady Tigers will now face two-seed Georgetown College tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 11 at 3:30 p.m. ET in the Mid-South Conference semifinal match.

Cumberland, the sixth-seed, ends its season at 19-14 overall.

Maria Coelho led the Lady Tigers offensive attack with 17 kills, while Annija Abolina was right behind with 16. But the Lady Tigers finished with a hitting percentage of .163 compared to Cumberland's .222. Amanda Worrell led the Phoenix with 17 kills.

Inoa Fields also had a good night with 52 assists on 60 of the Lady Tiger kills.

Campbellsville started slow, as Cumberland led the entire first set and won, 25-21. But the Lady Tigers rallied in the second and third to win with matching numbers, 25-23, 25-23.

In the second set, though, the Phoenix didn't make it easy for Campbellsville. With the Lady Tigers leading 9-5, Cumberland would go on a 7-3 run to take its first lead, 13-12. But Campbellsville rallied right back with 6-2 run and ended up leading 21-17 before the Phoenix would try and stop the momentum with a timeout.

Out of the break, Cumberland would score a pair of points to force coach Amy Zink to call a timeout but the Lady Tigers rallied to win 25-23.

The third set was neck-and-neck until the very end. With the score tied at 17-all, Cumberland would go on a 4-0 run to lead 21-17. Zink would then call another timeout and her troops answered the call this time with an 8-2 run – the final three points coming off Julia Fonseca blocks - to end the set and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Fonseca finished the night with 10 kills and eight total blocks – one solo and seven assists – for a new career-high.

Cumberland put an end to the Lady Tiger momentum in the fourth, though, as the Phoenix dominated by winning 25-12 to force a winner take all fifth-set

Campbellsville seemed like it would run away with the final set taking a commanding 8-2 lead but Cumberland wouldn't go down without swinging. The Phoenix went on a 7-1 run and cut the Lady Tiger lead to two, 11-9, but that was as close as Campbellsville would let them get.

After a timeout by Zink, Campbellsville ended the set on a 4-2 run to win the match.

Outside of the Lady Tigers offensive attack, Katie Johnson led CU with 22 digs, while Libero of the Year Jessie Pendleton recorded 17. Savannah Moss and Fields registered 11 digs as well.
