Tigers open Lou Cunningham with 129-58 win over OSU Mansfield

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Tiger basketball tipped off the 17th Annual Lou Cunningham Classic in style tonight, winning 129-58 over Ohio State Mansfield.

Rod Lawrence and Shawn Johnson led the Tigers with 16 points – the 16 for Lawrence was a new career-high. Lawrence also led CU with 10 rebounds for his first double-double in the Maroon and Grey.

Campbellsville (3-1) had a total of six players in double figures, as Zach Perry (14), Hagen Tyler (13), Taylor Howard (12) and Elliott Young (11) also pitched in. The 12 points for Howard is a new career-high, as he was perfect from the 3-point line hitting all four buckets.

Campbellsville was too much for OSU Mansfield, as Byron Dean nailed an opening 3 to start the contest and the Tigers never trailed. For the second-straight game, Campbellsville was on fire from deep, hitting 20-of-47 (43 percent) from the 3=point line and 47-of-90 (52 percent) overall from the floor.

The 20 3-pointers are the most in a game since 2004 when CU nailed 18. The mark currently ranks No. 4 on the all-time list for most triples in a game. CU knocked down 22 against then-Pikeville College on Feb. 15, 1992 for top honors.

Coach Brent Vernon was able to play every player on his bench tonight, as the bench scored 74 of the 129 points (57 percent).

CU also hit the boards hard with 70 rebounds – breaking the known single-game record, 67, set on Dec. 30, 2004 vs. OSU Marion.

The Tigers were also able to register 35 assists tonight – the most since CU dished out 36 against Kentucky Christian University on Nov. 15, 2005. Campbellsville has played OSU Mansfield just three times in history and the Tigers have put up big assist numbers, as they finished with 28 assists in the 2008 and 2009 matchup as well.

Dean and Jalen Coates led CU with seven assists a piece, while Shelton finished with a new career-high six dimes.

Campbellsville will now seek a little revenge on Saturday, as the Tigers will finish the Lou Cunningham Classic with Harris-Stowe State at 4 p.m. ET. Fans can follow along the Campbellsville University Sport Network.
