Tigers overcome slow start to defeat #22 Faulkner, 67-60

PULASKI, Tenn. — Campbellsville overcame a very slow start to today's Mid-South/Southern States Challenge but caught fire when it needed to and downed No. 22 Faulkner University, 67-60.

The 11th-ranked Tigers started out ice cold by only hitting two 2-point field goals in the first half but CU caught fire from deep. Trailing 10-6 with 12:55 left in the opening half, Antonio Chapman sparked Campbellsville with the first of four first-half triples and the Tigers sprinted till the end of the half.

Trailing 18-7 with 7:05 left, CU ended up going on an 18-0 run and held Faulkner scoreless for almost 7:00 of game time. Lawrence drilled a 3 after grabbing his own rebound and Chapman followed the next CU possession with his second triple.

Chapman gave CU its first lead 19-18 with his third 3-pointer then Lawrence stole the show with a pair of triples on consecutive possessions giving CU a 25-18 lead.

Faulkner was able to battle back to end the first half, though. The Eagles went on a 9-2 run and tied the game back at 27. But with the clock running lo2 to end the first period, Byron Dean picked up a steal and found Chapman in the left corner for another 3 at the buzzer. The Tigers took a 30-27 lead into the break.

Campbellsville forced 17 turnovers on the day and converted those into 24 points.

Chapman and Lawrence led CU at the break with 12 points, as Chapman finished with 12 but Lawrence tallied a CU career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds for the day.

Campbellsville continued that momentum in the second half, as Hagen Tyler found space to bury a couple of triples.

Faulkner would answer, though. The Eagles went on a 15-6 run and took a 45-42 lead forcing coach Brent Vernon to call a timeout. Vernon drew up a play for his sharp shooter, Tyler, and he delivered knotting the game at 45-all.

After a 3 by Faulkner's Logan Jozwiak, neither team would score for almost three minutes until Elliott Young scored four-straight – making a 3 and hitting 1-of-2 from the free throw line - to give CU a 51-48 lead it would not relinquish with 4:38 remaining.

Campbellsville went on another streak, 9-0, from the 8:26 mark until Young capped the run with basket giving CU a 57-48 lead.

After only hitting 6-of-16 from the free throw line in the first 16 minutes, the Tigers converted down the stretch. CU was able to ice the Eagles by making 10-of-14 from the free throw line in the final four minutes and CU ended the day hitting 64 percent (16-of-30).

Jozwiak led Faulkner with 19 points on 6-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-7 from deep.

Campbellsville will now close The Challenge against host Martin Methodist College on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. ET. Fans can follow along the CU Sports Network, 88.7 The Tiger and wlcufm.com.
