CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Grand View College came into Tiger Town and upset the 12
th-seeded Campbellsville University Tigers on Saturday night in the NAIA Opening Round, 2-1.
The loss for Campbellsville (15-1-3) is the first in 36 games, as the Tigers held the NAIA's longest win streak at 31-0-5.
Grand View (14-6-2) came out of the gates hitting on all cylinders and Adjani Clarence put the Vikings ahead with the games first score in the 6
th minute. The goal allowed by the CU defense was the first in over a month (Oct. 11 vs. Cumberland).
Clarence gave the Vikings a little cushion just 18 minutes later, as Bruno Henrique picked up his second assist, pushing the Grand View lead to 2-0.
Going into halftime, the Tigers registered just one shot (wide), while Grand View had nine and four of those were on goal.
Out of the break, Campbellsville was able to cut the deficit in half, as
Nathan Heath capitalized on a penalty kick in the 59
th minute after being fouled in the box.
CU had a prime opportunity to knot the match at two but
Joao Gomiero missed wide in the 69
th minute and the Tigers were unable to get another strike off in the final 21 minutes.
The contest started to get a little chippy late, as the frustration started to settle in for Campbellsville. A total of 24 fouls were called and five cards were awarded.
The Tigers were forced to play a man down in the final two minutes, as sophomore defender
Daniel Nimmo was awarded a red card on a hard slide tackle.
The Vikings dominated the offensive play, finishing with 15 shots - seven on goal, while CU had just four shots and two on goal.
Grand View now will travel to Miami, Fla. for the NAIA Championship and will play host Keiser University in the second round.
Campbellsville is eliminated from the Championship and will now travel to the National Christian College Athletic Association Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla. More information will be provided on CampbellsvilleTigers.com once it is released.
