Emmanuel College upsets Tigers in NCCAA Championship Pool Play

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — A header in the 30th minute by Emmanuel's Jeremy Gwaltney is all the Lions would need to put away Campbellsville in today's opening match of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Men's Soccer Championship at Austin-Tindall Soccer Complex. The Tigers lost 2-0.

Gwaltney received a pass from Diebyd Contreas and bumped it by CU's Gonzalo Sapena. No. 9-seed Emmanuel (12-7-1) picked up insurance in the 70th minute when Andrew Tanner found the back of the net off a pass from Martin Mitreski.

The No. 1-seed Tigers (15-2-3) collected 13 shots but only three on goal. Lucas Cury led CU with three shots, while Yudai Yamauchi and Joao Gomiero had two.

Sapena saved seven shots in his 90 minutes of windy, rough-and-tumble play. Twenty fouls were called, eight on CU, with two yellow cards issued to the Tigers' Alex Higdon and Nathan Heath.

Campbellsville held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, five in the second half.

The loss puts Campbellsville's back against the wall in the pool play event. The Tigers will be back on the field Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 1 p.m. against No. 6 Grace College.
