COLUMBIA, Ky. — Campbellsville improved to 8-5 today after beating Kentucky Christian University, 80-72, on the second day of the Lindsey Wilson College Basketball Christmas Classic at Biggers Sports Center.
The Tigers broke the game open with less than a minute in the first half, scoring the last four points to lead at halftime, 42-34. That lead expanded to 14 points, 61-47, with 10 minutes to go in the game.
Kentucky Christian University (4-10) kept it close, though, and wouldn't disappear in the second half. Campbellsville's bench outscored the Knights 19-0 in the first half and 39-0 for the game.
With CU leading 61-47, KCU ended up going on a 16-0 run while the Tigers went scoreless for almost five minutes.
KCU tied the score at 61-61 with 6:22 to go when Miller hit a couple of free throws and Trenton Walker a layup. Miller, who led everyone with 26 points, hit a layup that put KCU up 63-61. But that lit a momentary fire under Campbellsville after the KCU run.
Jalen Coates and Rod Lawrence combined for seven straight points and CU held a 72-67 lead with 2:20 to go. The Knights' Miller fouled out with 1:49 to go. His absence was a big plus for CU.
Hagen Tyler led CU with 22 points and
Andre Applewhite and Coates joined him in double figures with 15 and 10, respectively.
It was an uninspired first 10 minutes for CU with the Knights leading 19-14 midway through the opening 20 minutes. KCU's Hayden Dunn (12) and Nick Miller (11) kept the Knights close until the final minute.
Campbellsville had nine points off six turnovers in the first half, two coming from
Antonio Chapman who took a ball the length of the court with 35 seconds to go to give the Tigers their margin at intermission. CU scored eight of the half's last 11 points.
The Tigers don't play again until Friday, Dec. 30 when Indiana University Southeast comes to the Powell Athletic Center for a 5 p.m. game.
