Young's double-double leads Tigers past IU Southeast, 68-61

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Senior Elliott Young produced his first double-double of the season to lead Campbellsville men's basketball to a 68-61 win over Indiana University Southeast on Friday evening.

The Grenadiers (10-3) came in averaging 85 points per game but the Tigers held IUS to a season-low 61 points. Also, Campbellsville finished hitting 17-of-21 from the charity stripe (81 percent), while the Grenadiers hit 4-of-11 (36 percent).

Outside of Young's 17, Hagen Tyler finished with 10 points – all in the first half. Tyler drained the first of his three opening-half 3-pointers and was fouled to take advantage with a four-point play. Campbellsville was able to push its lead to seven points, 12-5, with 17:17 left, but the Grenadiers went on a 12-6 run and a few minutes later hit six straight buckets to take a 35-28 lead.

But CU ended the first-half on a quick 4-0 run and cut the deficit to three points, 35-32.

The Tigers started the second half on a 11-6 run, IUS went over three minutes without a field goal and Campbellsville took advantage. The Tigers took their first lead since the 7:47 mark in the first half with a triple by Young but IUS came right back to knot that game at 54. But the Grenadiers were unable to recapture the lead the rest of the way.

With 7:00 left, Jalen Coates hit a step-back jumper to start another mini run, 6-0, and was capped by a put-back slam by Erik Kinney and another dunk by Rod Lawrence.

Leading 60-54, CU went cold from the floor and didn't score in 2:31 of action. But the Grenadiers came up empty on eight of its next nine possessions and the Tigers were able to hang on late. In the final 5:00 CU had just one basket – a finger roll by Byron Dean with 1:04 left – and Dean grabbed a steal in the final seconds to seal the victory.

Kinney finished with eight points and eight rebounds, while Shawn Johnson, Rod Lawrence and Andre Applewhite each tallied seven. The Tigers out-rebounded IUS 40-32

The Tigers end the first semester and the 2016 calendar year with an 8-5 record and 1-1 inside the Mid-South Conference. The Tigers will have a full week to prepare for its toughest part of the schedule yet, though.
