Erickson's bat, strong starting pitching seal DH sweep

PULASKI, Tenn. — Cody Erickson hit a game-winning home run in the eighth inning of game one and delivered an RBI double in game two to seal a doubleheader sweep over Martin Methodist College with a pair of 1-0 victories.

In addition to his two RBI, Erickson finished the day reaching base four times, going 3-for-4, recording on a walk and also scoring a run.

Game 1: Campbellsville 1, Martin Methodist 0 –

Erickson broke a scoreless tie in the top of the eight inning and delivered a game-winning home run over the left field fence to propel the Tigers (2-0) to a 1-0 victory in extra innings of game one.

Starting pitchers Mario Morales (1-0) and Blake Beavers (0-2) dueled in the first seven innings. Both pitchers finished throwing 7.2 innings but Morales kept the Redhawks scoreless in his first outing. He scattered six hits and allowed four walks and struck out one. The four walks for Morales is one more walk than he allowed in all of last season (60 innings) when he set the NAIA record for the least walks allowed in a single-season (3).

After the Erickson dinger, Morales went back out to seal the complete game but after picking up two quick outs, he gave up a single and a walk before coach Beauford Sanders went to the bullpen.

Sanders went to lefty Jake Pannunzio and the senior from Sunrise Beach, Australia induced Pat Lecroy to fly out to end the game – giving Pannunzio his first career save as a Tiger.

Cameron Ketchen finished with two hits in game one but was stranded on base in each inning. Nestor Linares was the only other Tiger to pick up a hit.

Game two: Campbellsville 1, Martin Methodist 0 -

Erickson once again broke a scoreless tie – but this time it came a lot sooner. After a single by Linares in the fourth inning, Erickson connected on a two-out RBI double to right field to score his teammate from first base and put the Tigers ahead, 1-0. Erickson finished game two reaching base three times, going 2-for-2 with the one RBI and also walking once.

That was the only run Campbellsville would need, as 2015 First Team All-MSC performer Nick Morehead shut down the Redhawks. Morehead (1-0) pitched a complete game four-hitter and struck out four in the win.

Martin Methodist (1-4) used four pitchers after starter Jake Shadix lasted only five innings. The Tigers chased Shadix out of the game by scattering seven hits, but Martin Methodist's bullpen shutdown Campbellsville in the final two innings.

The Redhawks made noise in their final at bat. Morehead gave up a one-out single to Austin Schubert and Collin Jolly reached on an error to put the tying run on second and the game-winning run on first.

But for the second consecutive game, Pat Lecroy failed to come up with the big hit for Martin Methodist. Morehead induced Lecroy to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat and seal an opening weekend series for the Tigers.

Campbellsville stays on the road and travels to Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn. on Wednesday, Feb. 17. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
