CU uses six pitchers and hits five doubles in 5-3 win

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Tiger baseball finished with five doubles and used six pitchers through nine innings en route to a 5-3 non-conference win over Brescia University on Tuesday afternoon.

Riley Joyce led the offensive attack, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. He was followed by Cody Erickson and Miguel Solano, who both went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Solano also pitched in with an RBI.

Three of the five doubles led to all of Campbellsville's runs. The first wave of two-baggers started in the second inning with a leadoff double by Erickson. Alex Echevarria followed suit two batters later to score Erickson for the Tigers first run. After a groundout by Mike Castellano, Echevarria moved to third base then Joyce picked up his first hit and RBI with a seeing-eye single through the left side to put CU ahead, 2-1.

The Tigers scratched another run in the third and fourth innings – all with the help of a double. Solano led off the third with a single and Erickson picked up his second double to right field to put runners on second and third with zero outs. Casey Scott picked up an RBI groundout to short to push the CU lead, 3-1.

In the fourth, Richard Ramirez picked up a one-out double and scored on Joyce's second two-bagger to push the Tigers ahead 4-1.

Campbellsville was able to push across another run in the sixth – but this time it started with a hit by pitch. Ramirez reached base for the second time and moved to third on a Joyce single. Two batters later Solano drove in his only run with an RBI-single up the middle to score Ramirez and give the Tigers a little cushion.

Brescia made a little noise in the eighth and ninth innings. Ryan Norrix allowed a one-out single and a sac bunt to move JaQuan Jones into scoring position. Zach Johnson then delivered an RBI-single up the middle to pull the Bearcats to within three runs.

In the ninth, Phillips allowed a leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly for Brescia to pull the game within two runs. Kenny Rideout and Colton Hurt both delivered two one-out singles to bring the go-ahead run to the plate but Phillips picked up his first save as a Tiger with consecutive ground ball outs to end the Bearcat rally.

CU showed its depth in the bullpen, using six mid-week pitchers and allowing only six Bearcat hits. Eric Eckley started on the mound but did not get through the first inning. After a leadoff walk, stolen base and another walk, head coach Beauford Sanders went to junior southpaw Dexter Cline out of the bullpen.

Cline was almost able to get the Tigers out of the first inning unscathed but CU was unable to turn a double play and allowed the Bearcats to take a 1-0 advantage.

Cline (1-0), who picked up his first win of the season, sat Brescia down 1-2-3 in the second and allowed only four batters to come to the plate in the third inning before an inning-ending double play.

Senior Casey Congleton came in for the fourth and fifth innings and shut the Bearcats down in order. CU also used Norrix for an inning, Irvin Ruiz for two and Phillips for one.

Cline finished by only allowing one hit and one run in 2 2/3 innings of work.

The Tigers now hit the road for a four-game road swing in Montgomery, Ala. CU travels to Faulkner University on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27 for a three-game series and then plays at Auburn-Montgomery on Sunday, Feb. 28 to conclude the road trip. The Tigers then return for nine-straight home games starting on Tuesday, March 3.
