MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Tiger baseball scored single runs in the first and ninth innings, but could not get the timely hit they needed in the final inning, falling 4-2 to No. 3 Faulkner University.
Cameron Ketchen led the Tigers with three hits – a bunt single and two infield singles.
Richard Ramirez, who came in to play first base for
Mike Castellano, finished with two hits off the bench.
In the final inning, Austin Moreland picked up the save but allowed the Tigers to get right back in the game. After allowing a single to Ramirez and a double to
Riley Joyce, CU was in business with runners on second and third with one out and the tying run coming to the plate.
With the lineup turning back over to the top, leadoff man
Jacob Carrera worked a walk and
Cameron Ketchen singled to the shortstop to score Ramirez from third with two outs and pull Campbellsville within two runs.
Cody Erickson had a chance to knot the game or put the Tigers ahead but flew out to end the game.
Mario Morales (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season after throwing six strong innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. He also struck out six of the 24 Faulkner batters he faced.
Casey Congleton also saw action in his second game of the season, working the seventh inning allowing two hits and an earned run.
Irvin Ruiz pitched a perfect eighth inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
Mark Vasquez (4-0) picked up the win after hurling 7 1/3 innings and allowing six Tiger hits and one earned run. That one run came in the first frame after Vasquez allowed a few walks and a bunt single to Ketchen to load the bases. Then
Romello Carbuccia also worked a base on balls to pick up his first RBI as a Tiger.
Campbellsville out-hit the Eagles, 11-9 but the Tigers were unable to come up with the timely hit. CU and Faulkner will be back in action Saturday afternoon starting at 2 p.m. ET for the series ending doubleheader. Live video is available
