Tiger baseball splits doubleheader with Cumberlands

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Two-out rallies hurt No. 19 Campbellsville tonight, as the Tigers fell 5-1 to University of the Cumberlands in game one but rallied to even the series with a 5-3 win over the Patriots in the night cap of the twin bill.

The Tigers and Patriots are scheduled for a nine inning game tomorrow afternoon at HIG Field with first pitch scheduled for Noon ET.

Game one – Cumberlands 5, Campbellsville 1

Noah Gapp (4-0) teamed up with Mathias Brewers in game one to shut down Campbellsville's offense, allowing only four hits and one run in nine innings.

CU's Nick Morehead (2-3), Justin Phillips and Dexter Cline combined to allow 15 hits and five runs.

Gapp shutdown Campbellsville in the first four frames, not allowing a hit and walking one batter. Cumberlands scored a run in the second and another two in the third to push across all the runs they would need.

After recording two quick outs, Morehead allowed a single to Tripp Jamieson and an RBI double to Zach McRoberts.

In the third, UC's William Roger led off with a single and Landon Byron launched the first of three combined home runs on the night for both clubs, pushing the Patriot lead to 3-0.

With Gapp going into the fifth inning with a no-hit bid, Richard Ramirez reached base on a two-our error by Cumberland and the Tigers were able to take advantage. After the error that extended the inning, Alex Echevarria broke up the no-hitter with a single and Diego Reynoso followed suite to push across the first CU run with an RBI single.

After two walks to start the sixth, Cumberlands went to Brewers out of the pen and put the CU rally to bed. CU played small ball and took the bat out of cleanup hitter Cody Erickson's hands to move runners into scoring position with a sac bunt. But Riley Joyce struck out and Miguel Solano flied out to end the threat.

Cumberlands played add-on in the top of the seventh via extra base hits. McRoberts delivered his first home run of the season and Byron drove in Jesse Reyes with an RBI single.

Brewers shut down Campbellsville in the final four innings, allowing only two hits.

Game two – Campbellsville 5, Cumberlands 3

T.J. Campbell (4-1) came in only allowing four total runs in his first four starts but allowed four runs in the first to Campbellsville to help even the series.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the first inning, Cameron Ketchen hit his first home run off the scoreboard and put CU ahead, 1-0. The Tigers then picked up singles by Ramirez and Erickson before Reynoso walked to load the bases. The big blow came with via a bases clearing three RBI double to centerfield off the bat of Joyce.

CU added another run in the second after Nestor Linares led off with a double and later scored on a sac fly by Casey Scott.

Mario Morales (4-1) kept the Patriots in check until the fifth inning. After consecutive singles, William Roger cleared the bases with a two RBI triple to right-center field cutting the Tigers lead, 5-2. After another single, Morales picked up a huge play from his battery mate, Riley Joyce. Joyce snapped a throw down to first base to pick off Reyes from first and Morales used that momentum to strike out Byron to end the UC threat.

CU went to Jake Pannunzio in the seventh, as the closer sat the Patriots down 1-2-3 to earn his MSC leading seventh save in nine appearances.

Morales finished throwing another complete game with eight strikeouts.
