CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Tiger baseball could not slow down the hot bats of Roger Williams and Jose Alonso, dropping the rubber match with University of the Cumberlands, 6-2.
Campbellsville (12-7, 1-2 MSC) drops its first Mid-South Conference series, 2-1. On Friday night, the Tigers fell in in game one (5-1) but came away with a victory in game two (5-3). Cumberlands improves to 18-5 overall and 2-1 inside the conference.
CU was only able to scratch six hits but five of those coming from the duo of
Nestor Linares (3-of-4) and
Cameron Ketchen (2-for-3). Cumberlands was led by Roger (3-for-5), Reed Spata (2-for-4) and Jose Alonzo drove in three runs.
Cumberlands scratched a run in the first after Williams delivered a leadoff double and later scored on an RBI single by Landon Byron.
The Patriots added on in the third. Roger led off the with a single and advanced after a passed ball by
Riley Joyce. After moving to third on a groundout, Alonzo hit his first home run of the season off a 2-2 hanging breaking ball putting UC ahead, 3-0.
That was all Cumberlands would need. Campbellsville's
Nick Przybylek (3-1) pitched perfect 4
th, 5
th and 6
th innings but the Patriots rallied for two more runs in the seventh. Reed Spata led off with a drag bunt single and Roger followed with a base knock to right field.
Ryan Norrix replaced Przybylek on the mound but his command sub par – walking a batter to load the bases and then allowing another free pass to score the fourth UC run.
Casey Congleton replaced Norrix but allowed a sac fly to Stone Osbourn pushing the UC lead to 5-0.
Campbellsville took advantage of two Cumberlands errors in the seventh. Joyce reached on the first error and Linares followed with a single to put runners on first and second with one out. After another error, CU loaded the bases and scored on a wild pitch by UC starter Zach Hurley.
Diego Reynoso then recorded an RBI groundout to score Linares, 5-2. Hurley (2-1) picked up the win by throwing seven strong innings, allowing five hits and two unearned runs.
Cumberlands added an insurance run in the eighth. After a leadoff single, the Patriots took advantage of a wild pickoff attempt by Congleton to move into scoring position. Spata delivered an RBI single to right-center field to push UC's lead to 6-2.
Jeff Rivera finished the final two innings allowing just one hit for UC and
Justin Phillips completed the final 1.2 innings for CU on the mound, allowing just one hit.
Przybylek finished tossing 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs. He also struck out a career-high 10 batters but threw 105 pitches.
Campbellsville returns to the diamond next week with a single game at Union College on Tuesday, March 15. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET in Barbourville, Ky.
