SPRINGFIELD, Ky. — The wheels fell off for the Tigers in the rubber match with Mid-South Conference foe St. Catharine College on Saturday afternoon. Campbellsville fell in game three of the series, 7-0.
St. Catharine (21-9, 3-3 MSC) scored one run in the first inning and that was all the Patriots would need to upend Campbellsville (15-9, 2-4 MSC).
Starting pitcher
Nick Morehead (2-4) allowed six earned runs on nine hits and walked a season-high four batters. Morehead threw 95 pitches in his five innings of work.
CU's defense didn't help, committing three errors.
The Tigers were able to scratch seven hits off St. Catharine's four pitchers on the day.
Diego Reynoso went 2-for-3, while
Riley Joyce finished 2-for-4.
Cameron Ketchen,
Cody Erickson and
Richard Ramirez were able to muster the other three hits.
The only big threat Campbellsville had all game came in the second inning and fourth innings. After two quick outs, Reynoso was hit by a pitch and then advanced all the way to third after a double to deep left-center field by Joyce. But
Jarrod Ball grounded out to end the threat.
CU also had another opportunity in the fourth after consecutive singles by Ramirez and Reynoso, but once again the timely hit never came through.
St. Catharine put together 12 hits overall with Tyler Devine leading the way going 4-for-5. Alfredo Bohorquez (2-for-3), Carlos Cespedes (2-for-4) and Drew Kissel (2-for-5) also picked up multiple hits for the Patriots.
Justin Phillips saw action on the mound for CU, throwing three scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. Marvin Galarza (5-1) went six strong innings for St. Catharine to pick up the win. He allowed five hits and struck out four Tigers.
Campbellsville returns to the diamond on Monday, March 21 with a single game against West Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. ET at HIG Field. CU will also host Indiana University Southeast (Wednesday) next week before heading to Georgetown College for another MSC series on the weekend.
