CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Tiger baseball blanked Taylor University in game one of today's doubleheader 5-0 but the Trojans spoiled the sweep, winning game two, 10-4.
Mario Morales (3-1) threw a three-hit complete game shutout and struck out a career-high 10 batters. Richard Ramirez led the Tigers at the plate, going 3-for-6 with three RBI. Nestor Linares also had three hits and scored four runs.
Game one: Campbellsville 5, Taylor 0 – Box Score
Campbellsville scored single runs in the second and third innings before opening the gates in the sixth with a three run inning.
In the second – CU scratched the first run after recording two quick outs. Linares singled and Alex Echevarria reached on a walk to move runners to first and second before Ramirez delivered with an RBI single. With the single, the Tigers chased starting pitcher Andrew Feldman. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and one run on 28 pitches.
Jamie Bristol was the new pitcher for the Trojans and shut Campbellsville down the next 3 1/3 innings. The Tigers were only able to muster one hit but did score a run in the third – also with two outs. After a leadoff double by Casey Scott, Miguel Solano struck out and Cody Erickson grounded out. Scott put pressure on the defense by stealing third base and Lincoln Reed's wild throw advanced Scott home.
Moving to the sixth, Matt Patton started the inning and allowed four hits and three runs. Erickson picked up a one-out single and Riley Joyce hit a big fly over the left field field to push CU ahead, 5-0.
Morales shut down Taylor in the seventh, inducing a ground ball and recording two of his 10 strikeouts.
Game two: Taylor 10, Campbellsville 4 - Box Score
Taylor used a pair of four run innings and seniors Nick Morehead (2-2) and Casey Congleton were unable to slow down the Trojan bats.
Lincoln Reed led off the second inning with a double and eventually scored on a two-out single by Sam Wiese.
The Tigers answered with a pair of runs in the second to take a brief, 2-1 lead. A leadoff walk by Cameron Ketchen and a two-out walk by Ramirez allowed the Tigers to score two runs after Jacob Carrera doubled to left field.
Then the flood gates opened in the third inning. After three straight singles, Jake West hit a grand slam to plate all four of Trojan runs.
After adding an insurance run in the fourth, the Trojans brought eight batters to the plate and scored four more runs to push their lead to 10-2.
In the bottom half of the sixth, CU was able to plate two runs but it was too little too late.
Taylor University had three players record two hits and the Trojans finished with 12 in game two. Ryan Masters was awarded the win to move his record to 2-0.
