CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Nestor Linares hit a 2-run home run in game three of the series and Jake Pannunzio picked up a six-out save to seal a series sweep over No. 10 Lindsey Wilson College on Saturday at HIG Field.
Campbellsville scored three first-inning runs in game two of the series – game one of today's doubleheader - and never looked back, winning 6-1.
In game three, CU had to come-from-behind and erased a five-run deficit to secure the sweep, 6-5.
Game one – Campbellsville 6, Lindsey Wilson 1 -- Box Score
Mario Morales (5-3) tossed his second complete game of the season, allowing just five hits and one run. The lone run for Lindsey Wilson came in the ninth inning on a sac fly by Jan Carlos Ortiz.
CU scored three runs in the first inning and took advantage of an error by starter Daniel Ferrell (6-2). Linares singled to open the inning and advanced to third on a sac bunt by Casey Scott and error by Ferrell on the throw. He scored on an RBI single by Cameron Ketchen.
Then CU went to the small ball part of its offense. The Tigers used a pair of squeeze bunts by Riley Joyce and Diego Reynoso to scratch two more runs.
Morales and Ferrell went back and fourth until CU played add-on with two more runs in the sixth. A leadoff single by Richard Ramirez came around to score on another Blue Raider error. Then CU once again used the squeeze play with Linares to score Miguel Solano from third to go ahead, 5-0.
CU added an insurance run in the eighth off reliever James Roll. Romello Carbuccia singled with two outs and came around to score on Casey Scott's single to centerfield.
Morales went back out for the ninth to try and secure a complete game shutout but a leadoff hi-by-pitch scored on the sac fly by Ortiz.
Game two – Campbellsville 6, Lindsey Wilson 5 – Box Score
Lindsey Wilson scored a first-inning run and put up a four-spot in the third to take a 5-0 lead off starter CU Nick Morehead. The big blow came from Jaydon Jackson - a 3-run home run to left field. But the Tigers didn't panic and stuck with the process.
CU scratched three runs in the third. After a leadoff walk by Carbuccia, Diego Reynoso doubled to left field moving runners to second and third with one out. Another Lindsey Wilson error came back to haunt the Blue Raiders, as Carbuccia scored on a dropped catch at first base by Aaron Ashton and Reynoso ended up scoring on an RBI groundout by Scott.
Cody Erickson plated the third run with an RBI single scoring Linares with two outs.
The Tigers flexed their muscles in the fourth. Another leadoff walk to Carbuccia ended up scoring on a two-out single by Reynoso then Linares came through with his third home run – a two-run shot to deep left-center field giving CU its first lead of the game.
Now in line for the victory, Morehead was replaced by Justin Phillips for one inning of relief work. Phillips allowed a single but faced the minimum, picking up a 1-6-3 double play to end the fifth.
Pannunzio came on for two innings and allowed one base runner before earning his Mid-South Conference leading 10th save.
Morehead picked up the win and improved his record to 3-4. Aaron Doughty fell to 3-4 for Lindsey Wilson. The Blue Raiders actually out-hit CU 7-5 and the Tigers committed three errors on defense.
Campbellsville returns home to host Union College on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. ET at HIG Field before Shawnee State University comes to Tiger Town for another MSC series next weekend.Â
