NEW ALBANY, Ind. — Indiana University Southeast got the best of Campbellsville in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon. The Grenadiers knocked off the 16th-ranked Tigers, 7-4.
Campbellsville (29-13) allowed 16 IUS hits and was only able to muster seven itself. The middle of the order did the damage for the 25th-ranked Grenadiers, combining to go 11-for-16, driving in five runs and scoring five as well.
Dexter Cline started on the mound and allowed one run in three innings of work, but the Tigers pitching staff was unable to hold everything together after that.
Campbellsville tied the game at one in the fourth inning.
Cameron Ketchen reached on an IUS error and the Tigers put together consecutive singles to get on the board with an RBI base knock by
Riley Joyce.
But Indiana University Southeast answered right back in the fourth.
Nelson Quark replaced Cline on the mound and walked his first batter her saw. After a sac bunt and stolen base, Trent Simpson put IUS back ahead, 2-1 with an RBI single.
CU came right back with another single run in the fifth after another free pass given by the IUS pitching staff.
Romello Carbuccia moved to second on a sac bunt and came around to score on an RBI single by
Casey Scott to tie the game at two.
An inning later the flood gates opened.
Nick Morehead replaced
Mario Morales (4-5) on the hill and allowed four hits and four runs in 2/3 of an inning to allow the Grenadiers to take a 6-2 lead – an advantage they would not relinquish.
CU was able to score runs in the seventh and eighth innings – both on a hit-by-pitch or a walk surrendered by the IUS pitching staff.
The Grenadiers picked up a leadoff triple in the eight by Matt Volz and Kyle Asher followed with a double to push the IUS lead to three, 7-4. Volz was joined by Asher and Logan Coughlin with three hits to lead IUS.
Scott and
Richard Ramirez led the Tigers with two hits.
Campbellsville will now travel to Cumberland University for its final Mid-South Conference series of the season this weekend. The Tigers and Phoenix are scheduled for a 2 p.m. ET first pitch n Friday, April 22. CU is tied atop the regular season standings with Lindsey Wilson College at 12-6. The weekend series will be the deciding factor for the MSC championship.
